  1. The line in the sand was the not trade clause. If Brez sucks it up and adds the no trade clause, Breggie comes back regardless of how he handled the negotiations prior to that point.
  2. You don't need to explain to me. I was just stating what Brez was probably thinking. He clearly thought just running it back with one bat addition would be good enough.
  3. Sending money FOR Trout's contract. Crazy.
  4. I mean, it seems clear that Bregman should have been brought back. His leadership was more important to growing the younger players than just his production on the field. Teaming him with a big bat across the diamond in Contreras should have given the offense enough of a lift. I know Bregman isn't looking great now, but the team around him is. Interesting!
  5. The goal was playoffs for sure. Brez probably thought a better rotation would get them further (Gio missed the playoffs, Bello pitched poorly). Now the goal is simply get back to respectability.
  6. Story is now in his LAD negative WAR Nomar phase. They were at least smart enough to move him off SS.
  7. Traded in his year 30 season. So Story's 2023 season, if Story didn't have a huge financial commitment attached to him.
  8. Breslow should have tipped him off that he wanted to get rid of Cora at some point so that maybe he considered opting out. Missed opportunity.
  9. But the problem with the Sox right now is that the majority of the lineup isn't producing. Contreras and Abreu have been great. Rafaela has been good enough. Everyone else has been disappointing. If those players had simply played to expectations, not to a start level, this team's record would look like last season.
  10. I don't care about the years already under control (arb years). The only years that matter during the extension are really the years after initial control ends! The cash doesn't matter. Only AAV matters. If they go any higher this year, they'll get draft pick penalized. Yuck! You don't want to get rid of him TODAY. TOMORROW?
  11. If the Sox eat a substantial portion of his contract, they could deal him back to COL. They have a horrible SS and nobody in the minors. Story could then retire there.
  12. You locked him into 2/24 for 30-31 at the expense of trade flexibility and payroll flexibility now. How much would he realistically sign for on the open market then? I don't think you're saving much money TBH. You're basically planting your flag in CF with Rafaela for better or worse. At one point after '24, people were holding their noses and saying "maybe he's just a UTIL, but it's ok because of how great Duran is." I think you only extend certain players. I don't think you extend all every day players that come through the system. It doesn't make financial or baseball sense to me. Not every prospect works out and you're going to see a lot of underwater contracts.
  13. Sure, but Roman Anthony has the same pedigree. Is it "production" or "star power?"
  14. Imagine if they had additional $$$ sitting around from not doing frivolous extensions!
  15. He's not a FA. No reason to give him a raise just because. You might be happy with him today, you may not be happy with him 2 years from now.
  16. Weird list for sure. Per AAV: Diaz Iglesias Williams Suarez Helsley Fairbankes Only one of the top six AAV guys is listed?
  17. Who cares about star power? WSH is second in runs and isn't loaded with stars.
  18. The outcome is that the Sox freed up their payroll from 8M and now have a roster where one of their best hitters doesn't have to sit out because underperforming Jarren Duran needs to play every day. Duran can't be successful in a bench role. They needed to commit to either Duran fulltime or Masa fulltime. And it's not "why do they have such great players," it's "why do they have a roster that doesn't make sense." You want a bench that has versatility and can come in for specific reasons. Duran doesn't have the mentality to be a bench player. Masa doesn't have the appropriate skillset for a bench bat (LHB, slap hitter, no speed). The amount of times that you are chomping at the bit to put Masa in for a pinch hitting situation is few and far between. He's a guy that gets more value when he's playing all game and putting more balls into play.
  19. I was saying trade Duran for prospects all offseason. 🫠
  20. His extended salary isn't microscopic. It's 6M AAV. It's money they didn't need to spend. It reduces his trade value and locks the franchise into having these players in the org.
  21. Red Sox 1992 - 83 wRC+ 1993 - 90 wRC+ 1994 - 89 wRC+ 92-94- 87 wRC+ 5th worst in MLB (includes FL/COL, two brand new franchises) 2026 - 85 wRC+
