Dave's final gift. I think that's why Bloom said he needs to find a reliable guy that can provide innings. We should also probably expect one of the younger guys to function as a 5th starter again at some point.

Sox SP's averaged exactly 5 innings pitched per start last season (21st in the league). In 2021? The averaged 5 IP (18th in the league). Back in 2018, they averaged 5 1/3 (17th in the league). It really hasn't changed much since Cora came onboard. While starters are throwing a little less, it's in line with the trend across MLB. At least now, there's an extra reliever you can put innings on as the rosters have expanded.

Starters are currently: Sale Paxton Whitlock Bello Pivetta My concern is more towards Paxton not being able to keep his role as starter. I think Whitlock should be fine as a third starter. Yes, they do need to sign an SP though!

With the Jansen signing, it looks like the bullpen shouldn't be as embarrassing as it has been the past few years. They seem to have a closer and a few high leverage arms at the moment, but who knows... Jansen - Closer Houck - 7/8 Schreiber - 7/8 Martin - 7/8 Kelly - Middle Relief Barnes - Middle Relief Joely - Lefty Winckowski - Swingman Maybe they'll look for another left handed guy to throw out there? They say Paxton will get the chance to start, but maybe he takes Winckowski's spot as swingman?

I guess it depends on the market. If there wasn't a lot of high end talent that didn't fit your needs? Sox needed OF, SS, SP. I honestly didn't see them going 30M on either OF or SP. I'm not sure Nimmo is the best fit for the current Sox OF construction. Judge would be, but they weren't outbidding everyone else. The starters that have been signed I didn't project to sign with the Sox either. Maybe 30x3 in another year?

If he was 30, he'd be getting a massive contract like Diaz.

His statcast numbers are still strong. He may trail off a little, but he can at least give you a Timlin like presence for 2 years if he struggles a little. He still k's a lot of guys and his velo hasn't dropped.

I'd rather do one at 30, a few at 15-20 and the rest just fill in as needed. The 7-9 was a big flashing warning sign to all of us. Yikes. It's Bloom's bed that he's making. If it doesn't work out. He's gone. No final judgement until 4/1 tho.

The Semien signing looked really bad early on last season. We'll see how that one goes. If Story sticks at 2b, his defense should at least give him good value to offset his k rate. If he stays healthy, he should be fine.

Call me crazy, but I thought the bullpen could be handled by just throwing some of the younger guys in there like Winckowski, Crawford, Murphy, Mata, Ward. They won't all work out, but it would be a better use of funds than going to the FA market where prices are inflated. Use the FA money to fill what your org doesn't have at the upper levels: OF, SS, DH, SP, etc.
