    Never really been the Sox' strongsuit. Theo did an ok job when Paplebon/Lester/Buchholz were pushed through.

    When Dombrowski took over, he started his first offseason with: Moncada Devers Espinoza Margot Benintendi Kopech Some high end talent, but it really dropped off after that. #10 in the system was Deven Marrero. After '16/'17 promotions and the Sale trade, the system really didn't have much left to crow about that was ready to contribute in the near future. The system was best when run under Theo and hasn't really reached those heights since.

    Everyone talks about Lou Whitaker needing to get in the HOF. Yes, hard agree! Grich first though.

    Deals for high end talent like Sale and Kimbrel are fine to me. I don't think it's worthwhile to churn through your farm depth for Pomeranz, Thornburg and guys like that.

    Yes, that's how it works around here. Some people just want Bloom to be the fall guy. They are actively rooting against him. I just want the Sox to be good. I don't care if Bloom stays or goes. I want the Sox to commit to having a strong farm system and a playoff caliber MLB team that isn't draining the farm for nonsense.

    No, last year was just bad. This year could just be weird weird. They could get really hot, then really cold. They have a high ceiling and a very low floor. I think there are going to be some fun moments and not fun moments.

    Law is a known Sox hater. It comes up every year when we discuss him. He was also the guy who brought up the issue of DD decimating the farm system. He's a real bastard.

    Lugo played 3 games in POR last season. He's most likely not a SS going forward due to skill though, not due to roster crunch.

    Right now, GM's really only want prospects that are MLB ready or very close to it (like Rafaela). The majority of the Sox' intriguing prospects were still below AA last season. GM's don't want that risk. Too many things can go wrong between A+ and MLB.

    The farm system has a better outlook than the MLB club for this year IMO. 2023 could be a very weird year for the Sox.

Law is the outlier. Whether or not the system is 11th or better is up for debate. However, the system is in much better shape than it was back in 2020.

    So if Bloom's trade was Gray, May, Downs and Wong, most of the pundits would have lauded the trade. As of today, is that still a good enough return? They would have still been terrible in 2020 and 2022 and would have been worse off in 2021. All you have out of the deal is an injured Dustin May and another starter who is worse than Pivetta.

    When I read a lot of the evaluations on the Mookie trade the grades basically said "the return is fine if the Sox weren't planning on competing, but this is the Boston Red Sox." If it was the 2022 Cubs or Nationals making the same trade, they probably get a higher grade. Regardless, I agree that return just doesn't feel like it was enough NO MATTER WHAT. I said it at the time too. I wanted them to sign Mookie for whatever it took. It should have been Mookie and Devers and let Xander walk.

    Also, let's revisit the Soto trade in a few years and see where those guys wind up.

    At the time, Verdugo was a decent piece. Age 23: 2 fWAR (prior to the trade) Age 24: 1.9 fWAR (prorated 5.4 for COVID season) If Verdugo has a 4 fWAR season this year and next, does it help at all? Downs was a highly rated prospect. He just flamed out.

    It was disgraceful for them to let him go no matter what. People can bicker about the return, he should have retired in a Sox jersey. Whether it was Henry being too cheap to keep him around or the other contracts getting in the way, it's just not fair.

    Soto was traded for 2.5 years, during a pennant chase. Mookie was traded for 1 year. That's an amazingly huge difference.

    I had felt so sorry for that franchise after all those chants of "19-88" over and over at each away game. So sad for them.
