  1. Ah, but have you heard about his age and talent?
  2. I know it must be hard taking L's first thing in the morning. Go have another cup of coffee though.
  3. The new team has to follow the same Rule 5 restrictions.
  4. How many guys have been successful jumping straight from rookie ball to MLB regardless of time off? The list isn't big. What does his pitching even look like? We don't even know how much he has been throwing or if he's been able to work with pitching instructors for the past few years. To just shrug that off is a little bit of a mistake. Noah Song had a lot of talent, but he is far from a sure bet that some people are making him out to be.
  5. Yes, but should we start a new thread?
  6. Just take the L, loser.
  7. No, but it implies that ESPN has the correct answer, which would be the 3+ bWAR. Your ruling is denied.
  8. If I'm ranking the likelihood of scenarios: 1. Song gets traded to a third division team that can carry him (PIT, WSH, etc.) 2. Song sticks on the Phillies but only sees mop up duty and it's not great 3. Song gets sent back to BOS 4. Song sticks on the Phillies and is successful
  9. Whitlock also had success at AA. Song hasn't even pitched in low A. Whitlock's rookie ball numbers were pretty good too (14.1 Innings, 22K, 0 BB), even better than Song's.
  10. Original poster said “no checking ESPN” which uses bWAR only.
  11. Because you want to field a competitive team with the best players possible.
  12. Either return him or trade him somewhere else.
  13. @MattGelb Last note on Noah Song for today: The Phillies have clarified to say Song was not discharged. He was transferred from active duty to selective reserves and is still serving while being permitted to play professional baseball. This was a call by the Navy. Song had requested a waiver over and over but it had not been approved. It was finally approved.
  14. @ChrisCotillo Tanner Houck tells MassLive that he had conversations with the Red Sox about a contract extension last year. The sides didn't get far, but he's keeping the door open for more talks in 2023. "If the opportunity on both sides is right, I’d be willing to."
  15. Phillies projected pen: Dominguez Alvarado Kimbrel Soto Bellatti Strahm Brogdon Nelson/Song If you are the Phillies, do you want the guy who put up 1 fWAR last year or Noah Song? Nelson: 96 MPH FB Slider Change (worst pitch) 88th percentile Hard Hit 85th xSLG 96th Barrel % He has options so you can just stash him if Song looks ugly. Not sure I'd expect Song to look that good this year though. If you're drafting him it's for 2024, 2025, 2026....
  16. @MattGelb For what it's worth, the Phillies do not appear to benefit much from this happening right now. Had Song not been discharged until after 2023 season, he would have only had to spend 90 days on active MLB roster in 2024 to satisfy Rule 5 requirements. Now, it has to be all of '23.
  17. Like I said, this has all the makings of a really weird year for the Sox.
  18. There are several issues at play. 1. We don't know how Song got out of the Navy or when the decision was made. 2. We don't know what his arm is going to look like or how much he has thrown. 3. We have never seen him throw in a level higher than rookie ball. Many prospects flame out after succeeding at that level. 4. If the Sox put him on the 40 man and put him onto the Military List, he'd still lose option years. If I had to call it, Ward will be a better pitcher this year than Song.
  19. DD loves his guys though. We don't have much left from that era to deal!
  20. @LouMerloni Day 1 in Ft Myers. I like watching guys I have t seen before. Yoshida hitting bombs. He’s not a slap hitter. Rafaela has some serious thunder in his hands. Wow. I like updates like this.
  21. Most likely dealt. Who knows what he even looks like after 3 years without pitching competitively. See if they'll take Brasier for him.
  22. @GlobeChadFinn Nice to see 2012 Red Sox BABIP legend Pedro Ciriaco’s name among the team’s organizational moves today. He was hired as a Dominican Summer League instructor, presumably specializing in Hitting ‘Em Where They Ain’t.
  23. We weren't strung along by Song. It was out of his hands. DD knew when to swoop in.
  24. Kluber pitched a full season last year. Pivetta pitched a full season last year. Bello pitched a full season last year. The question marks are Sale, Paxton and Whitlock. I'm just assuming that Sale's competitiveness is going to win out one of these years so may as well bet on this one. He said he's "a real boy" this year so he must be ready to go. Last year's staff included the ever injured Eovaldi, Mr Half-Year Rich Hill and Wacha who seems to reach his annual innings limit at 125 since 2018. There are question marks about this season, but I feel better about these question marks.
  25. @MattGelb Noah Song, who is arriving at the Phillies complex today, must be added to the 40-man roster by Opening Day. He can remain on the military list until then. He faces a tall task trying to make a big-league team after three years without pitching. But it’s real interesting.
