True. Market may be a bit better next year for top tier SP as it looks to have a bit more depth compared to this years class.

Sox offer was fair. Cubs had to go overboard to beat it. I would have been happy with the deal for the next 2 maybe 3 years. After that I'd be hoping it wasn't a CC type anchor.

Then they won't be getting Cueto either if that's the case. It would be absurd to trade either of those 2 for a 1 year rental. Cueto isn't taking a hometown extension offer either. If he's traded he's gonna want to go to FA and he will be right up in the 130-150M deals if he has a good walk year. I think Latos should be the top target on the Reds.

Maybe it would have but we don't know what Lester's agents were asking for either. For all we know they could have walked in with some ridiculous demand and the Red Sox countered with their own ridiculous offer. I'm not making excuses for anyone. Just saying we really don't know how it all went down. The Cubs and Sox in the end offered the same base deal. Cubs just dropped a 20M signing bonus and a 7th year option to get it inked. The Sox just aren't as desperate as the Cubs are to win. That may upset some fans but I'm guessing people will still be coming to the Park and watching the games on tv. That and it's still early. Still lots of interesting possibilities when it comes to SP this year and next.

Lester got a 20M signing bonus with the Cubs. 20M straight to your pocket would be pretty damn hard to pass up.

I don't know, i don't think he was gonna go for a 5 year deal at around 100-120M. And that's what i consider a discount. Anything into 6 years is right at market value and not really a discount anymore. You could argue about a smaller aav over 6 being a discount but from what this FO has shown they value discounts on years more than they do AAV. Lester knew if he had a good season he was looking at 6-7 year offers all day. It was a 20-40M gamble and he won.

It's the age old argument over paying a guy to play everyday or to pitch every 5th day. That's what that argument will boil down to.

Sorry dude no crystal balls here. We won't know if it was good or not til we see what he can do full time. But with his contract i doubt he's not starting unless he is awful. Vic is signed for a year. If Betts beats him out then Betts beats him out. If Betts doesn't have a good spring he will be in AAA until he gets another shot.

That is the hope with Hanley. Castillo has a ML contract and is getting paid. They will both be starting in the OF. Only question who is starting in RF Betts or Vic.

Any frontline guys will need to be traded for. Shields is a 1 on a team like Kc or TB, not Boston or Ny. Scherzer is an obvious no no. They can fill the mid to end of the rotation with FA but if they want an ace they will need to trade for one. I'm also glad the didn't sink 150M into Lester. And i may have missed it but did he ever say he would have signed 5/100 this spring?

For next season? About the same. Latos was hurt last year but the previous 3 years he was basically a 200 IP SP. I'd also think Latos being 4 years younger may be the better bet when considering 6-7 year contract offers.

Latos is interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the rotation. Haven't read much about him, any guess to the asking price?

That's for sure. All those moves scream they are going for it. AL Central is gonna be tough. Twins are gonna get spanked all season.

Yes Farrell is good about saying the right things. Something i like about him. He will be a good FO type when he is done in the dugout.
