  1. I happen to think Masterson's minor league career was quite good. First of all his High-A performance was in Lancaster, which if you recall is an extreme hitters league. Then he went to AA and for the rest of the season and then early the next season and struck out over a batter an inning, had a K/BB close to 3.0 and displayed a great GB/FB ratio. As a starter in the majors he's posted a 4.03 in the AL East in close to 90 innings in just his first two years. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a 3.80 ERA SP in the NL RIGHT NOW.
  2. So a team approaches the Yankees and tells them Phil Hughes' value is lower because he's a MR, that's a valid approach? He doesn't have a defined role on THE RED SOX because the 5 rotation spots are filled by 2 aces, a blue chip prospect, and two veterans who aren't going to be sent to the pen for a second year player. And he doesn't have a set-up role because he's in a stacked bullpen. On other teams he's easily in the rotation or even a set-up guy. Masterson has in fact been pretty solid in the pen. He blew up twice which makes his numbers look kind of mediocre but has a 2.23 ERA otherwise. And yes I see him as a starter. Maybe not for us, but that's what makes him a good trading chip, because he's valued by other teams and isn't cemented into a role here (but not for a lack of talent).
  3. What are you even trying to say? Teams will value Masterson, he's young, cheap, and has solid upside with his plus-sinker. The Red Sox won't be telling teams what Masterson's role should be. The Red Sox no doubt approach his value with the mindset that he's most likely a starter down the line and he certainly has the skill set to be one. Plus he'd a) be going to the NL and will be a sinker-baller in Petco that seems like a match made in heaven
  4. Martinez alone? No way, with Lee though I think it becomes a lot more interesting. EDIT: What everyone else said. And Dojj and Dipre stop derailing the thread, take it to anything goes
  5. Hit his 6th HR yesterday and had another solid 2-4 day with a double today. .279/.384/.508/.892, 21/31 BB/K and a perfect 11-0 with SB
  6. The link in the article is an ad for the Giants haha
  7. http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2009/07/latest_on_halla.html Breaking off from the mega thread... I'm pretty against trading Buchholz in a Halladay deal but this is one scenario where I'd be more inclined to do it. Fills both needs with a good bat and a legitimate (AL pitcher) #2 guy. I'm not sure what it will take but maybe Buchholz, Anderson, Delcarmen, Kalish, and Doubrout would be a solid offer
  8. lol the Red Sox aren't going to "give up the farm" yet Edes is suggesting probably 4 of Buchholz, Bard, Kelly, Bowden, and Tazawa? That's three extremely talented MLB ready SP, a AAA guy who's just about there and a high-upside 19 year old who's is in High-A. The Boston media doesn't know s*** about this farm system...
  9. To be honest I'm starting to think Martinez isn't the answer either. He's slumping badly right now and his OPS is down to just .833. Which isn't so bad as a catcher but extremely mediocre for a 1B and not worth top prospects. I have a feeling Martinez is not the same hitter he was from 04-07 and that we'd be overpaying if we traded Bowden/Masterson+ (which was actually turned down by the Guardians not the Sox). I like Gonzalez but my philosophy would not be to sell the farm on a 1B. I think now that his OPS has normalized after a ridiculous start that he's probably going to settle in as a .870-.900 guy as a member of the Padres and probably a bit higher considering leaving Petco but a hit going to better AL pitching. That's a great hitter and would be valuable in our lineup but IMO he's in a lower class right now then Pujols/Fielder/Youkillis/Tex/Cabrera/Morneau/Howard/Berkman (which just goes to show how high-producing 1B are not all that uncommon). The more I look at the options the more I'm content to staying put. I think the price on Gonzalez and Halladay is too high to make it worth it. Maybe Cliff Lee can be had for a package without Buchholz but that remains to be seen. I'd prefer to hold onto the chips and try to make a run at Hanley in the offseason.
  10. Where are you getting Reynolds name from and why would he be a lot cheaper? He's 25, plays a more premium position, makes league minimum and is posting a .916 OPS. That will not come at a reasonable price
  11. You've seen 9.2 innings of him this year, stop acting like you have him all figured out.
  12. The fastball command is way overblown. From the two starts I've seen since his callup it appears his velocity is up slightly and he has more movement on the pitch. He's going to need refine it in the majors and that may take some time but he's definitely on the right track. And lets not pretend Lester was some poster child of commanding pitches. When he first came up his stuff looked very shaky and he threw a lot of pitches to get through very few innings. Of course he's worked through that now after a dramatic turn around in June of 2008. Buchholz should get at least that amount of time.
  13. You think every other post is POTY...
  14. feels like Im walking on broken glasss
  15. No way in hell I'd ever make that trade
  16. Seems odd that an Guardians fan would jump onto a Red Sox board and post 28 times a day, but I could be wrong and maybe you're not who I think you are
  17. So now which old poster are you suns?
  18. Brackman doesn't have the consistent high-90's fastball that Bard has (I could probably count on one hand the pitchers who do) but his fastball was legit coming into the draft. The reason he was so high profiled also was that his knuckle-curve looked like a wipeout pitch. He hasn't shown that at all for a number of years and judging by the 'scouting' at the top of the page it appears it's no where close.
  19. Jacko I don't know why you bother responding to these people. Yanks took a chance on high-risk high-reward guy and have gotten burned. MDC was a TJ guy and he came back and has done well for himself. Prospect Nick Hagadone was a TJ guy last year and looks great this year. Personally I think the Yanks should shut Brackman down and convert him to a MR. His secondary stuff is lacking badly and he's almost 24.
  20. Legit 5-tool player who's tearing up Lowell. .275/.382/.495/.877 with 5 HR in 109 AB. He's a ways off but I really like what this kid brings to the table and I think he's the next big thing in our farm system. From BP a couple days ago: http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9267
  21. gotta think he throws the FB here
