  1. There are probably more recent examples of teams extending their aces than letting them get to free agency.
  2. It depends on who is in on the bidding. If the Yankees or Dodgers don't join in, the bidding will not go that high with the Cubs out of the picture.
  3. Yep, $120 million in March would have been excessively high, which is why I said that he could have been wrapped up for $110. The FO should be able to look forward and figure out how a market will develop. That's their job and they failed miserably.
  4. If the Yankees and Dodgers don't pursue him, I don't think he will cost much more than Lester, especially with one of the big players, the Cubs out of the bidding.
  5. Latos is better than Leake.
  6. They would have wrapped him up with a bow and a smile in March for $120 and it would have been considered high. It would have saved him from the stress of having to perform in a contract year and risk injury. That would have gotten it done without any doubt. Is it conjecture on my part, yes, but in March such an offer would have been uniformly considered as extravagant. That would not have been a discount. The Sox let the market develop and grow and some seasons the market can get ridiculously high. This was one of those seasons.
  7. I agree. The Sox should go hard for him. I he will sign around $160 million. The Sox can make that committment. Hopefully, the Yankees don't want him.
  8. Too bad that he hit like Craig Grebeck after we acquired him. I can't see him bringing back a big pitcher unless a lot of other pieces go with him
  9. Any Matt Clements available? At least he had a very hard head.
  10. I don't agree. I don't think the Cubs have gone from last place to poerhouse favorites at this point-- not to an extent where the rest of the division will be raising white flags before the start of the season. I think that is overstating the case. Cueto is going to cost us big. We will have to part with Betts or XB in addition to Cespedes.
  11. I think they could have wrapped up Lester for 5/110 during Spring Training. He would have been as happy as a pig in slop at 5/120 and everyone on TalkSox would have thought it to be riduculously high.
  12. Agreed. I don't blame Lester a bit. Once he had a big year, we traded him and he hit the open market, we were going to have to come up with huge money for him. At that point, why would he offer a discount? They could have made a nice generous offer in March and wrapped him up, but they didn't. They missed a huge opportunity. Now they will pay through the nose for other top pitchers whether they be FA's or through trades. If they go for a bunch of 4's and 5's, it really doesn't make sense to have spent all the money on Hanley and Pablo this season. Pablo was not a particular bargain.
  13. f*** awkward hug Henry and his whole FO full of bumbling fools. And f*** Theo too!! Hopefully he comes i last place for a third straight year.
  14. I am not following you here. What do you mean?
  15. Who's next? Another top pitcher will whether a FA or in a trade will cost us dearly.
  16. Screw Theo! I suspect that Lester is playing the former Boy Blunder and John Noodle Hug Henry, but we will win the $150 million boobie prize.
  17. That's okay as long as he doesn't become a disruptive jerk like Jay Payton did a few years ago.
  18. Do you think that he is more of an injury risk than Lester?
  19. Masterson can team-up with Buchholz at the top of the rotation as injured underperforming disappointments.
  20. The initial offer of $70 million will end up being less than half of what he will get. That wasn't a reasonable starting point. It didn't show good faith. It demonstrated the opposite. But we will have to move on. That doesn't change the fact that they f***ed this up.
  21. Get Scherzer-- better stuff and less innings on his arm.
  22. I guess the dreams of Lester/Shields or Lester/Hamel's were just dreams.
  23. Here we go with an RBI debate. Lol!
  24. If front line pitching ends up being prohibitively expensive for the Red Sox, they probably should not have spent $200 million on Panda and Hanley. Without a good staff, it is still a 4th place team.
