  1. The guy was clearly nuts, but science can't decide whether Dinosaurs were reptiles or more like birds or whether they were slow and plodding or fast and agile. Even highly educated people don't know all that much about what existed millions of years ago.
  2. A lot of pitchers are getting L's on their records while also being credited with a Quality Start. It is a very poor measure for good performance.
  3. I watched those Reds a lot as I always watched many Mets games on TV and in person. Gullett and Nolan were big starting pitching talents and the 1975 Reds had the 3rd best ERA in the league. There is no comparing that staff to our pile of garbage. You are a good poster that provides thoughtful posts and good analysis, but this is just way out there.
  4. Ortiz is slowing down. There is no doubt about that. Let's keep in mind that he has been a hitting god for years. He wasn't just good or very good. He was extraordinarily excellent. He will put up close to or exceed 30 HRs and 90 RBI again this year. That is not a problem. The reason that we will not go on a run is our pitching -- they are a collection of no-talent no named bums. There will be no consistency. This team has been hitting for a month now and the hitting is still heating up. We will get base runners and score runs. We will be sending Forest Gump's mother's box of chocolates to the mound every game. That equals no consistency.
  5. It's probably a safe bet that he doesn't give us a quality start. BTW, a QS needs to be redefined in a post steroid age. Six innings and 3 Runs is a 4.5 ERA -- basically you suck. That is not quality. They need to add an inning or subtract a run or both. It is a meaningless stat. Here's one that should generate some debate. I think that in today's game a QS is more meaningless than a Win for a pitcher. At least the win was an accomplishment getting your team a victory. A QS isn't quality and it often doesn't get your team a victory. It's a bogus stat.
  6. Bring a TalkSox sign and try to get on camera. Some media exposure would be good.
  7. I think I will call them bright spots. I can't get myself to characterize any aspect of this season as a success.
  8. So you have been drinking?
  9. Gullett wasnt just good. He was headed for greatness before he was cut down by injury. Gary Nolan was also a big top of the rotation arm on that Reds staff when healthy. He was more injury cursed than Gullett. The trash heap that we rolled out to start the 2015 season cannot be compared to the Reds staff in 1975. While I am sure that those WAR numbers for the Reds rotation are correct, I am also sure that they were heavily influenced by the managerial style of Sparky (Captain Hook) Anderson. He did not try to get 100 pitches from his starters. If his starters gave up 2 or 3 runs in the first inning and there were 5 base runners, he'd go to the pen. He had a bunch of good arms in his bullpen and he went to them early and often. He had no patience to let his starters work out of trouble.
  10. Dumb running by Mookie on that play.
  11. Bradley hit that with authority.
  12. Porcello has lowered his ERA to 5.42
  13. Monday is Dog Day at Fenway. Every day has been Dog Day at Fenway this season. For $10 you can take your dog for a walk around the warning track. The FO knows how to raise money. For an additional fee, you should be able to purchase the 2015 Red Sox Pitcher Experience allowing the dog to take a dump on the mound.
  14. The rotation cobbled together at the start of the season lacked a top of the rotation. It was a pair of 4s, a pair of 5s and a 3, and the 3 was a borderline 4. You can't win with that. 4s and 5s are not mediocre. Generally, they suck. When combined with top of the rotation pitchers the overall result usually averages out to mediocre, I.e. League average. A rotation comprised solely of 4s and 5s will usually combine to produce a bad result. To this point our two 4s, two 5a, and a 3 have performed like two 5s, two DFAs, and a 2/3 (Buch). Edit: btw, the 1975 Reds had a great top of the rotation pitcher in Don Gullett. His career was cut short by injury, but he was very good -- a star that was still on the rise when injuries ends his career.
  15. But under Ben's leadership they have lost a lot, not won a lot.
  16. I think they should be fired, because imo they have done a lousy job. I am just saying that if they really think these guys are the right guys for the job they shouldn't cave to public opinion. That would just lead to more bad decisions. I think that ownership's faith in Ben and Farrell is fairly well exhausted.
  17. If fan pressure is the reason he fires these guys, that is poor leadership. I think Ben definitely merits being fired after 3 miserable seasons in 4 years. He is damaging the franchise. Farrell, with the exception of 2013 , has been a last place manager every other season.
  18. 3.81 was league average in 2014. In the last 3 seasons, i think only 1 team out of 30 made the playoffs with a 4 ERA. If you plan on your staff putting up a 4 ERA these days, you are eliminating yourself from post season contention.
  19. He reminds them of Deion Sanders. Maybe he likes bling like Deion, or calls himself Prime Time, or maybe his best sport is football.
  20. i agree, but imo, if they go in the tank from now, Ben and Farrell will not be back next season. The only chance that Ben has to prevent going to GM Siberia is to make some moves and take a shot at turning this around.
  21. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/boston_red_sox/2015/06/red_sox_acting_like_they_re_actually_a_contender Ben is really starting to sound like Baghdad Bob-- delusional.
  22. Another day and no rumors about moves to bolster the pitching staff. They are just playing out the schedule hoping that the whole thing doesn't deteriorate into a circus. It looks like the only drama that we will have at TalkSox will be guessing the date that someone open the Offseason/Hot Stove thread. Last years was opened September 24th is my recollection. We can also have a Ben and Farrell countdown -- maybe a contest as to the date they get fired.
