  1. I have to disagree with you on this. For a big guy, WMB runs very well. He impressed me with his speed several times this year, most recently with his hustle double last night. He's not a speed merchant like Ellsbury or Crawford, but I'll bet that he can outrun anyone else on the team except for Kalish. Nava has only average speed. He's not as fast as WMB.
  2. I'm not holding my breath on this. It's likely that they will be eating some of Youk's salary, so the savings on Scutaro means nothing to me as a fan. It's all background bookkeeping. None of it dictates what moves they make or don't make. They are not the KC Royals. A $5-10 million move is not an obstacle to team like the Red Sox.
  3. Scutaro is the better player and he has filled the utility role throughout his career. He should be the utility guy. He could amply fill in for Pedroia and Aviles. Punto is like putting a black hole in the lineup.
  4. Scutaro is improving. He is very hot right now and Aviles has leveled off. Aviles' power stats are helped by Fenway.
  5. Scutaro is outperforming Avile, and he is outperforming Punto by a mile-- that is the real comparison. Punto should not be on this roster.
  6. Signing Ortiz was the right call, but offering him arbitration was not. They are in an unnecessary overpay situation with Ortiz. He is overpaid about 50%
  7. Neither has looked that good in the field recently. If it was purely a defensive move, I think he would have made it after the Sox had finished their half inning. Nava is not as fast as WMB, so the pinch running move didn't make sense unless he was protection WMB's legs.
  8. He really didn't do a bad job at 1B. He was adequate. He never hurt us too badly in the OF either. He was slow with a weak arm, but he postioned well and he had good instincts. He looked awkward, but the results weren't bad. As for the other OFers you mentioned, we had Roberts for only a couple of months. He rarely played. Nixon was on the DL for a good portion of Millar's time in Boston, so Millar played a lot of RF. Also, once Ortiz had proved that he could handle the DH spot, there was no reason to move him into the field. Most guys hate DHing ad don't do well as everyday DH's.
  9. The move was also confusing to me. WMB has had some hamstring issues. Maybe he wanted to save his legs.
  10. It was a good discussion. Unfortunately, it got derailed by the resident troll who know less than nothing about baseball and only contributes inflammatory posts. Duke and Theo are getting fresh starts. Theo's job is much easier because his team has a large budget and he doesn't have to compete against the budgets of the Yankees and Red Sox. Duke has shown an ability to rebuild and be competitive at the same time. Theo is in tear down mode in Chicago. The Cubs are losing like crazy and their isn't a single exciting player for the fans to watch. He had better start showing some significant improvement by 2013 or the fans will get restless. Right now, he has taken a last place team and made the on field product worse than he found it. We will see where the both of them are in 3 years. That will be the test. I worry that Cherries is not up to the standards of Cashman, Duke or the Tampa GM. He may be out of his depth. I hope he proves me wrong.
  11. Millar in the field gave the Sox more flexibility than Ortiz. Millar could be moved between 1B and the OF during a game if needed. Ortiz couldn't. I don't think they necessarily thought so much more of Millar at 1B than Ortiz.
  12. ANd that is the downside of young players.
  13. Epstein is getting his chance to prove himself in Chicago. He has to build that team from the ground up. If he is able to do so, he will not have to share credit with anyone. In Boston, the nucleus built by Duquette gave him a great head start and Larry L had Wonder Boy on a tight leash until 2007. When LL let Wonder Boy run, he ran wild and ran the team into the ground. Maybe he learned something from the experience.
  14. That was my position for this past off season. I thought they needed to get a reliable starting pitcher and a RF platoon tandem. They didn't get the starter and let the best closer they ever had walk. I don't think it would have taken a lot. So, yes I agree with your comment.
  15. They had 93 wins in 2002. They only needed some fine tuning for 2003.
  16. They should have won in 2003.
  17. I think you missed Johnny Damon. I believe that he was a free agent signing of Dan Duquette. He was another huge part of the foundation. We really shouldn't give him credit for building just the foundation. He really handed Theo a finished product. The 2003 team should have won the championship. Only a bumbling manager hired by new ownership stood in their way. Theo added Ortiz to the 2003 team, and he fell in his lap thanks to Pedro, who clued him in that Ortiz had been released. Theo will get his chance to build the Cubs from the ground up. Let's see if hew can do it, and if so, how long it takes.
  18. As to your reasons for the grumpiness, all I can say is that the players and the organization brought those reasons upon themselves.
  19. Dempster would definitely improve the pitching if he is healthy, and I agree that it is the pitching that is this team's weakness. Standing pat would be the FO's message that they are packing it in.
  20. The Red Sox problem is that it is very difficult for them to be able to upgrade their roster over the guys who will be returning from the DL. The rotation, even with Dice K, should not be terrible. If Morales can continue his magic, he could be a big boon to the rotation. Bailey will be returning to the bullpen. Melancon looks to be straightened out, and maybe Bard can return to being a useful bullpen piece. When Ellsbury, Crawford, and Ross return, the lineup should be potent with Kalish and Middlebrooks etc. However, by the time these guys get back, it may be too late to make a run at the division because the Yankees are putting some distance between themselves and the Red Sox. The Sox need to keep close to the Yankees. If they are 15 games behind at the All Star Break, they can forget the division. They be playing for a 1 game playoff with a wild card berth. They are caught in-between in this waiting game. There is nothing they can do but try to win as many games as possible with this skeleton crew and hope the Yankees hit a skid.
