  1. Yes, I do, which is why I said it's the worst defensive IF combination. It's amazing what happens when you actually read what someone is saying. And, that defense won't struggle with the routine play. What they won't do is take hits away.
  2. I can understand them wanting to give each of the guys (Lowell, Ortiz, Youk) a day off, so this probably won't happen, but you can get each of them in the lineup for all three games. Youk has played a few games in Pawtuckett at 2B (and one or two last year if I recall correctly). Loretta has played SS. 2B - Youk SS - Loretta 1B - Papi LF - Manny RF - Trot 3B - Lowell CF - Pena C - Varitek Pitcher That would be the worst possible IF defense, excluding potential bizarre combinations, but it would put the best lineup on the field.
  3. Absolutely. That way one can carry on with the fantasy that the team rarely "loses", but the manager does "give games away".
  4. Consider it whatever you want. I happen to agree with conventional wisdom where Ks, in-field FB, and low hit totals measure a pitcher's dominance. In my book, he hasn't dominated anyone, but he's been very effective recently. Tomato, tomahto.
  5. Yes, he'd have to clear waivers, but that is not written into his contract. MLB rules dictate that a player has 4 years of options to be sent down to the minors once they are classified as an MLB player. To get that classification a player is either called up for the first time, or they sign a MLB contract, which is what Pena did when he was 17. When he turned 21, he ran out of options, which means he'd have to go through the waiver process to be sent down.
  6. I give him credit. He does a good job inducing GBs, but once it leaves the bat, his job is done. He cannot control where it is hit to. 7 GIDPs in 2 games = astronomical rate = good fortune (luck) No, Roger Clemens strikes a lot of peole out because his stuff can miss bats. That is a skill. Wang throws just as hard, but he can't miss bats, so he doesn't have that skill. His skill is making the hitter put the ball on the ground, but that doesn't guarantee an out like a K does.
  7. GB or FB, it is still a ball in play. And, for a GIDP, the ball needs to be hit relatively close to the fielder. It takes some good fortune to get 4 of those like he did against Oakland. Yeah, he's doing his job by inducing GBs, but the luck comes in when they all go right to a fielder with runners on and less than two outs. All of the dominant seasons from sinkerball pitchers in the past decade (Kevin Brown with the Pads/Dodgers, Halladay, Brandon Webb) featured K rates above 6. Derek Lowe's good 2002 featured a K rate of 5.2, but a BB rate of only 1.9. Those last two games for Wang are an example of best case scenario on balls in play. The other shoe will drop.
  8. Wang has been pretty lucky with some timely DPs in those last two starts. Yeah, I know sinkerballers get a lot of GBs. But, while they can control what types of batted balls (LD, GB, FB ) hitters get, they can't control where it is hit. If he was dominating, his K/9 would be a lot higher than 3.32.
  9. Heheh, it appears to have done that. I cheer for the no-hitter (unless it's for the Yankees), so that wasn't the intent here. Besides, isn't the jinx when you mention it to the pitcher? Unless they are online in the dugout between innings, I doubt they are reading this.
  10. Got McPherson to start the 6th, but then Quinlann singled. On to tomorrow.
  11. FWIW, Lester supposedly doesn't take well to relief roles. He's fairly comfortable with his routine as a starter according to an interview I read (sorry no link, I can't find it again), but it gets disrupted as a reliever. Apparently he has a problem with not knowing when he's coming into the game. In one of his ST appearances, he came in after Schilling and E-Mart and 8 of his first 9 pitches were balls. Seems like he loses control (mentally) when he feels like he's not in control, which could account for why he started slow when his pitch count leash was fairly short. He's got more freedom to pitch now and the results support this line of thinking.
  12. Everyone loves the possibility of the no-hitter/perfect game. As I skim through the box scores on gameday each night, I'm always interested when I see a pitcher has yet to give up a hit through 3+ innings. I think we should have a catch-all thread dedicated to games where a no-no could be thrown. For those of you interested, the Blue Jays' Casey Janssen is perfect through 5 against the Angels tonight.
  13. Like I said, I'm not all for emulating it, but I do like the idea of observing/respecting streaks.
  14. Not that I want this board to emulate that board, but I kind of like the way SoSH does it. It's on a first come, first serve basis (starting at mid-night day of the next game) after a loss. The thread maker makes game threads until they lose, and someone else picks it up. I'd support a sticky with some similar policy in the game thread forum. I know it's meaningless, but it's fun to play along.
  15. Seriously. Respeck da mojo.
  16. Papi time.... Keep it going Manny.
  17. Snow looks at a cookie to get punched out. Oh well, 13 straight was nice.
  18. Dougie's going deep.... EDIT: Maybe not.
  19. I was good at chem too, but bio was all rote memorization. I needed numbers to keep me interested.
  20. He's talking about the .3% on the higher side as he toots his own horn.
  21. No official IQ test (online sampler has me in the 150-160 range), 1480 SAT, 3.96 pre-kids GPA on core courses (Calc I - III, Differetial Eq., Physics I - III, E & M, Statics, Dynamics), although the GPA has slipped with the addition of kids.
  22. http://www.haverodwilltravel.com/images/Trolling%202.jpg Any bites?
  23. Yeah, Wake doesn't exactly have it tonight. They need to get Bedard into a jam and get into the BP.
  24. The Arroyo we are more familiar with has returned. Four runs through 2 against Pittsburg.
