Beating a dead horse here, but most advanced defensive (and the the less advanced) all have Jeter below average as a fielder. He won those two gold gloves for a couple of reasons. First, ARod covers more ground than the typical 3B, so Jeter's poor performance in RF and ZR (typically bottom 3 of the AL pre-ARod) got a little better. And, he didn't have his customary amount of miscues. Basically, he didn't flat out suck. And, as soon as he didn't suck, he won it because he's a supastah who didn't have one yet. He was not the best SS is in the AL either year. But, it's pretty much a popularity contest, and everyone knows this, so I have no problem with him winning it. I do find it funny when it's used as evidence of his skill though.
