Maine ready to start at Yankee Stadium, Small Gets First Look at O's in 2005
Baltimore (70-79) at New York (86-63), 7:05 p.m. ET
The Orioles scored two runs in the first three innings, but then their offense was shut down, allowing the Yankees to rally for a 3-2 win on Monday at Yankee Stadium. With seven of the next 10 games against playoff contenders New York and Boston, Baltimore will try to play spoiler, beginning Tuesday. Right-hander John Maine will make his first career appearance against the Yankees. He has been solid since joining the rotation in late-August. Maine did not make it past the fifth inning of his first four starts, but he finally broke that string when he turned in 6 2/3 solid frames on Sept. 13 in a no-decision against the Rangers.
New York will counter with right-hander Aaron Small, a journeyman who joined the club from Triple-A Columbus on July 20. Small made an emergency start against the Rangers and collected his first win as a Yankee, then he alternated between the rotation and bullpen.
Small has won three straight outings, including a five-hitter against the A's on Sept. 3. The Orioles are a respectable 6-5 against the Bombers this season, but most of those games occurred when the O's were in first place in the American League East. The Orioles haven't won a season series against the Yankees since 1997, and they haven't won a season series at Yankee Stadium in 10 years. Brian Roberts, who singled and scored a run on Monday, has hit safely in 35 of his past 47 games.
