Red Sox Rumors: Duran-Padres Link Grows Stronger, Bregman Trade Rumor Shot Down

The rumor mill is firing on all cylinders as the All-Star break approaches, with the Red Sox being mentioned in nearly every rumor.

July is always one of the most interesting months in the baseball season. As of this writing, we are two days away from the All-Star break and there has been constant news swirling around the Red Sox since the month began. Notably, a report came out on July 7 stating that approximately a dozen teams were interested in acquiring Jarren Duran. While not surprising that teams are in on him with how he’s performed lately, we received some more detailed news on Friday, July 11 saying that the San Diego Padres have been “relentless” in their pursuit of Duran and have approached the Red Sox multiple times about trading for the left fielder, per MassLive’s Sean McAdam.

Alongside the Duran news, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic offered up some pointed remarks about the Red Sox trading their biggest free agent signing of the offseason, Alex Bregman. In short, don’t expect it to happen. Let’s take a dive into both rumors and see what they could mean for the team moving forward.

Jarren Duran is the Padres’ Big Target

Last month, I wrote about how the Red Sox and Padres didn’t match up super well on a deal for Duran. As of this writing, I still don’t disagree, but with the report coming out that the Padres have approached the Sox repeatedly trying to acquire Duran, that has to mean that they are willing to overextend themselves to land him. If that’s the case, get the deal done. On July 10, ESPN’s Jeff Passan published his ‘Top Moves for Contenders’ piece where he identified Duran as the best match for the Padres, due to their lack of having a capable left fielder on the roster. In that, Passan assumes that the Padres’ top prospect, shortstop Leo De Vries, is off-limits in trade discussions but mentions their second ranked prospect, catcher Ethan Salas. Salas would be a huge get for the Sox, but one that doesn’t fill a pressing need for the team since the emergence of rookie Carlos Narvaez has more or less filled the backstop position for the near future. He does make a point to say that the Padres could involve a third team or make a number of their top-tier relievers available in a potential deal for Duran while noting that San Diego is “willing to go places most other organizations would never consider.” We’ve seen the Padres get creative to bring in players they covet before, so if they truly want Duran, Breslow and the rest of the front office may be fine playing the waiting game with them to force the Padres’ hand and land the players and prospects they feel can be contributors in Boston for seasons to come.

Alex Bregman Hopefully Isn’t Going Anywhere

Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden reported on July 9 that if the Red Sox and Alex Bregman didn’t come to an agreement on a contract extension before the deadline, the third baseman could be traded to the Mariners, Brewers, or Tigers. A mere two days later, Bowden’s co-worker at The Athletic refuted those claims as aforementioned. Rosenthal rightfully brings up the question of, in a deal of Bregman, what would the Red Sox be hoping to get in return? The team needs a No. 2 starter and bullpen help more than anything. While Bregman would net a decent return, he’s not getting you high-leverage arms alone given his age and contract. The Sox could pay down a bit of the roughly $13 million that he’s owed over the remainder of the season to help increase the return package, but you’d likely be looking at prospects coming back to Boston. Right now, that’s not what the Red Sox need to push their chips to the center and go all in. Rosenthal says that the rumors of Bregman being shipped out at the deadline are preposterous.

    Good.

Bregman is a leader in the clubhouse and seemingly the go-to advice guy for rookies Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. He was playing out of his mind at the time of the injury and will be looking to return to form as the Red Sox seem to finally be figuring out how to play consistent, winning baseball in a post-Rafael Devers world. Having him around through the rest of this season, and the rest of his career, would bode well for the future of the franchise. Trading him for pennies on the dollar is shortsighted and makes the team far less likely to be competitive down the line.

As the weekend kicks off, expect more rumors and "leaks" to start showing up on your social media feeds. It may subside slightly during the beginning of the All-Star break, but it will kick into high gear immediately after the Midsummer Classic ends. Don’t be surprised to see Jarren Duran traded across the country, though I think we’d all be shocked if Alex Bregman played for another team this season.

You said the same thing about Bello and Rafaela…

I think his contract is a good deal. I think it potentially decreases his trade value to some teams, especially now that he's swooning in AAA.

This is different than my feeling on Bello and Rafaela. I've always said that Bello's deal was fine. I've always said that Rafaela's deal was unnecessary and may be proven wrong.

On the year Bednar has like a flat 2 ERA and like a 12.5 K/9, 13 saves so insurance if Chapman gets hurt. Great set up man. Prob close for us next year (his arb3 year)

Keller is like a 3.7-3.8 ERA pitcher, so like a good #3 thereabouts. Will slot in nicely in the middle of our rotation next 3 years.  I dont think hes overpaid at all, like 18m/cash per year but with like 15.5 lux tax hit.  Getting a 29 yr old solid #3 in free agency, you are looking at like 21m for 4-5 years. He provides good insurance if Gio or Bello struggle and can join our playoff rotation.  ALso will help us get there (playoffs).

You are right. I thought he was getting paid more. Lux Tax is just $15.4M- just a little more than Pivetta's $55M/4 deal.

    25:$15M, 26:$16.5M, 27:$18M, 28:$20M

    2021-2025:

fWAR: Keller 11.3, Joe Ryan 10.8, Pivetta 10.5, Sandoval 8.7

    ERA-: Ryan 90, Sandoval 91, Pivetta 96, Keller 101

    FIP: Ryan 3.73, Sandoval 3.75, Keller 3.87, Pivetta 4.03

    2023-2025:

    fWAR: Keller & Ryan 8.1, Pivetta 6.7

    ERA-: Pivetta 88, Ryan 89, Keller 94, Sandoval 105

I've been wanting us to trade for Keller for years, but somehow, I forgot just how good he has been, too.

    Thanks for the insights.

The nice thing about Bello is that he did not have to improve much at all to justify the extension and the price tag.  Rafaela was a bit more wobbly - but still cheap.  Even if it was unnecessary, it is a bit of who cares for me.

Campbell was a bit more reckless.  But I think getting him more confident/competent defensively is going to be at least as important in his AAA stay as the bat.

    They gambled.

If we tried to extend either, now, they'd both want and get more.

The deals are not over yet, but both look nice, now.

This was a post I saw on Facebook just now with accompanying photos so is legit -

It's easy to forget the things these players do away from the screen sometimes, and the connections they hold for fans. Duran is always outside signing autographs late into the night.

I've been one that was leaning to wanting him traded so we could get pitching, but you hear stuff like this and makes me question how black and white I see things on times (in terms of seeing them as value and moving them around casually to make things work to how I would best see fit).

I do like Jarren. He's got his issues as we've seen, and nobody is perfect, but he clearly cares, works his ass off and wants to be there for everyday fans.

I still hope we get pitching, but I hope he stays, now, too.

My sister posted a picture of me meeting Duran last week, but I’ll post my full story here. I was so nervous to meet him. Like a lot of other people here - he’s my favorite player. Aside from his game, I have so much admiration for his openness about his mental health. Anyways - I was so star struck I basically forgot how to speak. I was also shaking so much I think he had to hold me down so he could sign my jersey (second pic). I also have a pic of him holding my hair out of the way (because as I mentioned - I was a nervous wreck. Was absolutely 0 help to this man). When were leaving, I blabbered “am I the most awkward person you’ve met tonight? It’s okay if you say yes.” And he was like “no don’t worry you are good!”
As we were leaving, I tried to manage a “thank you” - and he said “remember - words are hard” and I’ll carry that with me forever. The whole interaction haunted me for days - because man, did I botch it. BUT he was really sweet about it and didn’t make me feel bad for probably taking up more time than I should have
He took his time with every single fan and was truly so humble. I heard him frequently say “why are you sorry?” to fans who apologized for asking him for multiple pictures/to sign more than one item. God only knows how long he was out there for - we stayed an extra 2 hours and he still had a whole line of people to meet after us. Do not trade this gem of a man - I beg you. The team - and the fans - need him. It’s so much bigger than baseball (but also worth noting: he’s more than just a clubhouse guy. We’ve seen what he can do)
Also: you’ll see I’m still holding the sharpie I was supposed to give him, but forgot (I cannot emphasize how useless I was during the whole interaction) - he brought his own pen with him for signatures.

That's awesome.  I love players who go out of their way for the fans.

I recently read a piece about Mike Trout hearing about a kid who had lost all his autographed baseball cards in a fire.  Trout sent him a signed jersey.

when Trout was in AA ball in Little Rock, AR, he was, by far, the nicest guy on the team -going out of his way to sign and take pics for anybody and everybody. every single day.

He seems like a great guy.  I'm legit sorry his career got so derailed by injuries.  Not so derailed he won't be going to the Hall, of course.

Unlike A-Rod, who can literally pull a kid out of the path of a speeding bus, and then instead of accolades is the subject of stories about how he set it up

First, try to understand the nomenclature.  Errors are not a metric, they are a stat.  Metrics are guesses or estimates.  Fielding % is also a stat not a metric.  The laughable part is your lack of understanding about what you are talking about.  OAA is WAG also known as a wild ass guess.  It's nothing more than one perspective on a guess at a fabricated concept called Outs Above Average.  That's a joke metric.  It's completely fabricated.  Ultimate Zone Ratings are fabricated.  They are new parameters made up to try to make apples to oranges comparisons that are wild ass guesses.

Most people actually use a measurement to define the best at something.  Go look up who had a better DRS in CF in 2024 - Duran or Rafaela.  I'll give you a hint, it's the guy with 2 errors in 550 total chances in CF since he joined the Red Sox.  It's Duran.

You do realize that just saying something is so doesn't actually make it so?  Right?

You are welcome to your opinion, but you must know that nobody cares what that is.  They care about facts, and the fact is Duran outperformed all Red Sox outfielders last year, with Rafaela second and Abreu the gold glove winner finishing 3rd.

It takes a lot of nerve to suggest something is laughable when you have no knowledge about the topic.

A metric is defined by Webster's as a "standard of measurement", so please stop embarrassing yourself by trying to be a douche to me, just because your imbecilic take is getting shredded by everybody. I have forgotten more about this game than you will ever know.

Let's start with you using Webster.  That suggests you are a very inexperienced person since you don't comprehend the difference between a standard dictionary and a baseball dictionary.  If so, I will behave politely due to your lack of experience.

So, besides the wrong choice of dictionary, you know what else you did that is embarrassing to you?   You think by being part of the inexperienced collective on this website that I actually care about what a bunch of junior baseball fans think about ANY part of the game.   I don't.

In 20 years, when you better understand the game, the metrics, the difference between data and estimates, then please come back to me and apologize for your petulance.  It's embarrassing.  You don't know what you don't know and that's a common mistake of young people.

Also, ANY TIME you want to put your knowledge of the GAME OF BASEBALL or YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BASEBALL against mine, please let me know.  What a ridiculous claim by you.  You have no idea who you are speaking with, but you are young enough to make anonymous claims of knowledge after I completely and transparently told my baseball story validating over 50 years of being involved in baseball and nearly 100 years of my family being involved in baseball.  That's called pure ignorance on your part.
