DC' FB% in 2026 is 24.3%, which is higher than his career 21.8%, and higher than the league average.  His HR/FB of 3.8% is likely unsustainably low.

I guess the .629 OPS Against was just luck. (Not saying that sarcastically.)

Being baseball, there are a ton of stats that you could push either way.  But I've never seen anyone with a 10/15 K/W succeed long-term.  And a 0/7 in his last few games is crazy bad.  TBH, I expect the RS to land something for him, as some BPs are really bad.

But I'd bet Watson has more value over the remainder of the season.

It might be hard to judge as DC will play somewhere else and in a different role.

Even on the Sox:

PAs Against

210 Watson- 4 High Leverage/ 11 Medium Leverage/195 Low leverage

96 Coulombe- 32 High Leverage/ 14 Medium Leverage/ 50 Low Leverage

It's kinda been apples to oranges,

It's pretty difficult to compare roles.  DC is still mostly a lefty specialist, while Watson is a multi-inning type guy.

His bb rate was up and his k rate was down. It's one of those cases where we just have to trust that the people watching the guys behind the scenes are seeing much more of what's going on with a player than what is happening on field. He's been ok, but it's a little bit of a surprising DFA. They must believe that Bello is going to stick in the pen for a while and are going to run out of room out there?

… and his release before the bonus was likely more a case of the Sox giving him up to the last minute to figure things out as opposed to saving some pennies…

$75k is nothing to this team. I know we joke about them not spending money, but it had everything to do with performance and the ASB. He already made $250k in roster bonuses previously.

Even NESN states "Boston needed to clear space anyway with Brayan Bello back in MLB and Ranger Suarez on his way to healing, as well." Well duh, so not really about the money then.

It had to the potential to be way more than $75K, but I can understand why they chose DC to cut loose. While I think Bello can fit Watson's "eat innings" role more than DC's more mid to high leverage lefty specialist role, I'm not so miffed by the choice, after reading these replies.

DC would have gone after Early or Suarez is added back, anyway.

Coulombe was surprisingly a high leverage arm per FanGraphs right behind Slaten/Chapman/Whitlock. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, and that was one reason I found it surprising we cut him loose. We obviously had faith in him, and his .629 OPS Against, although maybe a mirage, showed he did okay. He was at .634 in High Leverage.

.000 Watson (just 4 PAs)

.452 Whitlock

.536 Guerrero (20 PAs)

.550 Chapman (67)

.634 Coulombe (32)

.713 Kelly (21)

.716 Slaten (40)

.721 Moran (19)

1.007 Bello (33) not sure how many as RP

1.047 Weissert (39)

1.532 Samaniego (14)

My guess is that Bello is will fill a 3-4 inning role to rest the kids.  If you are trying to restrcit innings, what way than have the rookies throw 3-4 innings/twice thru the rotation and have Bello throw 3-4 innings.
