In a bad news, good news situation, the Boston Red Sox are losing one of their top relievers, right-hander Garrett Whitlock for the next two weeks. The good news is the injury doesn't appear to be as serious as it could have been.

The Red Sox on Thursday placed Whitlock on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his left knee and called up left-handed reliever Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester. Whitlock was injured on his first warmup pitch as he entered Sunday's game, a 6-5 walk-off loss to the Minnesota Twins. The conditions were not ideal, with rain making the mound muddy and slippery. Whitlock said he hyperextended the knee.

However, he stayed in to pitch in the top of the sixth with two outs and runners on first and second. The usually reliable Whitlock gave up a tying double and a two-run go-ahead single before getting the final out of the inning.

Whitlock has made 20 appearances over 19⅔ innings, with a 3.20 ERA, six walks and 25 strikeouts.

Samaniego is in his third stint with the Red Sox this season, his first in the bigs. He has been excellent across 18 appearances, posting a 1.04 ERA in 17⅓ innings, with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.

Now that the Sox are hitting a little more, the bullpen has become the issue. Injury to Whitlock puts bullpen arms in high leverage positions they cannot be in for Sox success.

I think the need for another BP arm was one of the few issues most of us agreed on.

Indeed. Almost all felt we needed another bat, too.

One bat, yes.  More of a divide on whether we needed a second bat, or a #2 SP.

I think notin might have been the only poster not complaining about the lack of a second bat behind Contreras.

I was big on a second big bat, but I did not view Bregman as that guy. I was fine with Suarez over Bregman for that reason.

Suarez, Gray, Contreras and Paredes (for Duran, even if involving a 3rd team) would have been fine by me.

I was big on adding a #2, even after we added Gray.

I thought Gray could be a decent #2 SP'er but hoped for someone like Suarez, instead. I was fine getting both- more than fine.

I did not view Bregman or Bichette as "big bats," so I wasn't upset we lost out on both.

I did think we needed another bat with Contreras. I was big on KMarte, and later Neto, when his name came up. I thought Okamoto might be worth the risk, but was not high on Murakami. I felt maybe E Suarez or Polanco would be worth a short term deal but both have underperformed.

I know some view me as supporting or defending Breslow, but they guy chose better guys than I wanted, so I'm not joining in on the name-calling. IMO, he chose better players than just about everyone here, including those who wanted Schwarber, because most of them wanted one or two more from Bichette, Bregman & Alonso. Some did want Cease, and he's off to a good start, but others wanted some that are doing worse than Suarez. Many wanted way more than what Brez was able to pay for, so blaming him for having a tight budget seems misdirected to em.

He made a major mistake, IMO. We needed at least one more bat. Many knew it. I think he did, too, but he failed. His job might be on the line because of it. I know many here want him and JH gone, yesterday.

Yes everyone views you as supporting, and defending #12 Breslow. Oh no! Not name calling. How mean. I know you want to say it, and it might not hurt as bad as you think, so be like the plane circling Fenway touting the banner and say it. Fire Breslow, and SELL THE TEAM.Don’t be scared. Come out from behind the curtain for once, and make a real contribution.👏
