In their first free-agent signing of the offseason, the Boston Red Sox have picked up southpaw Ranger Suarez on a 5-year, $130 million contract. As we’ve already noted here on Talk Sox, this breaks the free-agent curse hanging over the Red Sox this offseason and starts to paint a clearer picture of the team in a post-Alex Bregman world.  While I think I can speak for the vast majority of fans when I say that we’re relieved that Craig Breslow and company have done something now, the signing of Suárez signals that the team may be gearing up to move on from some established pitching depth, with far more players than spots available. There’s one name that, unfortunately, makes the most sense out of all of them.

Brayan Bello, it feels like your time with the Red Sox is quickly drawing to a close. I’ve talked at length about my love for Bello while also highlighting the fact that he is quite likely the most underrated trade chip the team currently possess. I won’t rehash that entire article, but he’s young, controllable, and has a high floor with a high-ceiling upside. When he’s on, he’s one of the best groundball pitchers in the game and it seemed that he learned to control his emotions on the mound far better in 2025 than he had in previous seasons. As the rotation is currently constructed, he’s the fourth-best pitcher on the team at best and could easily be passed up by either Connelly Early or Payton Tolle at some point during the 2026 season. While all of that is incredibly positive and reason enough for him to stick around Boston, it’s the exact reason the team can sell high on him and target their biggest need at the moment, an infielder to play either second or third.

Bello, thanks to his existing team control, might be enough on his own to bring back a quality infielder. Building a package around him and some members of the farm system could net the Red Sox an even bigger name on the trade market, and certainly one better than any free agent still currently available. I floated Bello as a potential name in a deal for Ketel Marte on a recent episode of the Talk Sox Podcast, but if GM Mike Hazen is to be believed, he’s no longer an option to be traded at this point in the offseason. It’s no secret that Craig Breslow likes to work the trade market and can get creative for the right return package. If a team is looking to upgrade their rotation, and maybe outfield at the same time, they could do a lot worse than calling and asking about Bello alongside one of the multitude of outfielders the Red Sox employ.

There’s an argument to be made that trading away someone like Tolle or Early would net the Red Sox a bigger returning player than a deal centered around Bello, but from everything that has come out of Fenway Fest, it seems like the team is incredibly high on both young lefties and would need to be absolutely blown away by a return to consider moving them. Bello and Suárez fill similar niches as shorter, groundball-heavy pitchers, and their recent commitment to the latter makes it easier to move on from their commitment to the former.

There’s still work to be done for Craig Breslow, but don’t be shocked to start seeing Bello’s name popping up in more and more rumors as we get closer to spring training. The front office knows there’s a lot of negativity being directed at the club right now, and Ranger Suarez goes a long way to proving the team is serious about making significant improvements, but unless they are going to pony up for Bo Bichette to play up the middle, the team is going to have to turn back to the trade market to find anything close to a suitable replacement for Bregman.

Brayan Bello is a homegrown pitcher with an established floor of a mid-rotation starter, but that's a valuable profile on the trade market as well. With Suárez signed up, it may be time to field some offers for the newfound pitching surplus in Boston.

While I was all about Geno Suarez at the start of the offseason, no more. This is a ground-ball staff and it's frustrating to watch ground balls not turned into outs. ALmost as frustration to watch K's with RISP, and Geno's likely to do that.

An above-average glove 3B, with Mayer moving to 2B, would give them a terrific defense. IF KC won't let go og Mikeal Garcia (they shouldn't), the target should me Matt Shaw of the Cubs, a great glove guy (13 runs saved to Bregman's 1) who'll lose his job to Bregman.

Abreu, Duran or Bello would be an overpay for a guy just finishing his rookie season, but there's the guy for that position if you want the best defender possible.

Interesting target.  I had him at times on my fantasy teams.  Nice stats, but only 3% in EV at 84.9, and only 16% in bat speed.  There are stats that need to be considered, but those two stood out.

If I thought his floor was the .690 that he had last year, I'd be glad to pay up.

If you are hoping Mayer will be a good defender, think again.  He is average at best based on his minor league inability to field balls.  His .953 Fielding Percentage is barely better than Devers.  Fans who continue to follow fake information from the metrics world are fools.  Just like Global Warming was a complete lie, so are the metrics currently being secretly produced (aren't verified) and then presented to the public as if they were the Bible.  DRS is BS.  Every play ends in a binary result, out or not out.  When Abreu leads the team in errors only playing part time and wins a GG similar to a very average Verdugo who finished 2nd the year before Abreu, there is clearly something wrong with the metric.  When a .953 fielding percentage (Mayer at SS in the minors) mysteriously translates to a star defender, there is obviously something wrong with the measurement.  So don't count on Mayer being anything more than an average defender.  That's why Eugenio Suarez does qualify as a not much worse than Mayer candidate at 3B except for the fact that he's a Contreras clone.  He's old and fading like Contreras which makes your suggestions superior on offense not just defense.  I wanted Jose Ramirez in a trade because he's still a legit star on defense and offense and we have SO MANY over-rated young players that Cleveland might think we could help them.  Mayer, Abreu, Arias and Justin Gonzalez for Ramirez would restock Cleveland's farm system and improve on Bregman at 3B.

Obviously, Garcia and Shaw would be cheaper but try to go big first then settle for either of them at a much lower cost.  You are definitely on the right track.  We already have one too many old players accelerating into their decline, we need a young and vibrant defender and hitter at 3B or a stud like Jose Ramirez so Boston can contend for the division like the good old days when we had Dombrowski providing monster talent that even Cora couldn't screw up.

Let's hope Breslow properly fills the spot at 3B and moves players like Abreu, Mayer, Yoshida and Bello to improve our catchers, 3B and 2B.  It was fun to see a competitive team in 2025.  He needs to surprise fans AGAIN in 2026.  The unnecessary demise of the great 2018 team by Bloom was a travesty and as expected when Mookie was given away, the franchise wasn't going to recover for at least 5 years.  We are now in year 6 of that recovery without a division win since Dombrowski got wrongfully fired.

I’m not wild about Shaw for other reasons, but he did have an .839 OPS in the second half.   If the Sox got that kind of resurgence out of Campbell, this infield would be all set…

Bello's contract really helps the Sox, who signed him to a 6-year, 55M deal with an option for 2030.

Sox has taken a hit for $9.67M in 24/25, while the cash outlay has only been $3.5M total, with $49.5M coming due over next 4 years.

For our trading partner, especially the ones that can afford it, the annual tax payroll of $9.67M for two years is behind them.

A team needing a starter would have 5 years of team control (counting the option year) and the 'fake' money totaling close to $16M has already been charged to that team. The flip side is they will be required to outlay cash the coming due.

From financial perspective, it was a shrewd move by the Sox.

Whatever return we get will further enhance his trade value to the Sox.

Moreover, Mayer was an overall #4 pick who many expert thought he could have easily been #1. It's time to find out what we really have in Mayer.
