Article: The 2024 Red Sox Are Struggling But The Farm System Is Full Of Promise

The 2024 Red Sox won’t be making the playoffs — but fans should be optimistic for next year and a certain prospect.

Barring an extraordinary hot streak, the Boston Red Sox, with a 70-69 record, won’t make the postseason this year. A few weeks ago, the Sox seemed poised for a playoff push, but a late-season collapse has left them with their worst record since mid-June.

While this season's outcome is disappointing, it's also somewhat expected. On the bright side, the young Sox have shown significant growth. Tanner Houck has emerged as a potential ace, and rising stars like Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Jarren Duran have also turned into great ball players.

Adding to the optimism, Boston has leveraged their post-2018 World Series struggles to acquire high-end prospects. Since their championship, they've drafted shortstop Marcelo Mayer (4th overall, 2021), outfielder Roman Anthony (79th overall, 2022), catcher Kyle Teel (14th overall, 2023), and outfielder Braden Montgomery (14th overall this year). Mayer, Teel, and Anthony, promoted to Triple-A Worcester in July, are seen as the club’s “big three,” with all expected to debut next season.

In addition to these top prospects, second baseman Kristian Campbell has emerged as another promising player. Drafted by the Sox in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Campbell made a strong impression at High-A Greenville, but his performance in Double-A truly stood out. He earned the Eastern League Player of the Month award in June and has continued to excel since his promotion to Triple-A, with a .302/.423/.558 slash line, a .981 OPS, and three home runs in 11 games.

Campbell's versatility adds further value, as he can cover center field and play multiple roles in the middle infield when needed.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Red Sox will need another impactful bat to complement their lineup rich with young talent. With the potential addition of Mayer, Teel, and Anthony by Opening Day, Campbell should be right there with them.

Red Sox second basemen rank last in the league in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS and are 28th in on-base percentage. These stats highlight a pressing need for Campbell’s bat at second base. While Boston has struggled to find stability at the position since Dustin Pedroia's tenure, Campbell could be the answer they’ve been searching for all these years.

Red Sox fans have reason to be optimistic. With a promising group of young talent on the horizon, including Mayer, Teel, Anthony, and Campbell, and steady young players like Duran, Abreu, and Rafaela leading the way, the likelihood of Boston making the playoffs next year seems higher than the past few seasons.

Nice article. I am extremely optimistic about our farm, and am happy so many are now ML ready or close to it. We also seem to have several players 1-2 years away and several more 3-4 years away. 

It would be nice to see more pitchers ranked higher, but we have a ton ranked from about 8th to 40th, and we can hope a few take big steps forward, next year. We may see Priester or Fitts help, next year, but neither rate to be more than a 4/5 SP'er, and more likely a 6/7 or mid-relief pitcher.

It would certainly help if they could find or develop a few pitchers whose ceilings are higher than the floor of a barn. And if any can do more than hit the side of a barn -- and become horses -- don't let them leave the barn... except in barnburners.
