@PeteAbe

Tigers lineup has eight RH hitters vs. Chris Sale.

Watch to see if he's able to throw his slider to the back foot of those hitters. If Sale has that pitch, he'll succeed.

If not ...

Bloom may not make the SOX as consistently competitive as his old Tampa team, but he could possibly make attendance at Fenway as low as his old Tampa team.

With the more I see of his moves, the more I wonder how much of a say he really had in Tampa? OR how much is someone else really calling the shots here?

Followed by 3 straight k's. This Tigers team is not good. If the batters didn't swing at anything, it'd be 1-0 and the bases would be loaded.

Sox offense looks helpless/hopeless for the 4th straight game. I'm of course excluding the first inning of the Pirates series.

...and maybe the last 7 of this game.

Tigers did take 2 of 3 against the best team in baseball.

6 of their starters have batting averages at 208 or below. As of now, the best team in baseball seems to be the Rays.

The Sox have no ace. Fire Bloom now!!!

Ace means big bucks, and JH ain't paying no big bucks for no pitcher, period. Bloom has no say in this, but probably agrees with JH.

@SoxNotes

Rafael Devers has passed Dustin Pedroia on the Red Sox’ all-time HR list:

12. Nomar Garciaparra 178

13. Jackie Jensen 170

T14. Tony Conigliaro 162

T14. Carlton Fisk 162

16. Xander Bogaerts 156

17. George Scott 154

18. Reggie Smith 149

19. RAFAEL DEVERS 141

20. Dustin Pedroia 140

Great to see those 2 runs scored and especially Raffie's dinger to LF.

Sale's fastball is way to hittable. He needs to keep using the cut fastball, which looks pretty effective to me. His slider is only OK, and his changeup, today anyway, seems not to be working. He did get screwed on two calls/pitches that definitely hit the corners.

I'd like to see his plan for constructing a rotation then. He's not drafting many pitchers. The IFA guys are very far away.

I said this on another thread. Historically, the Sox have relied heavily on simply buying pitchers. That has certainly been true in the John Henry era.

The Rays, on the other hand, won't even pay to keep a really good starter--and year in and year out they have pretty good pitching, with or without an ace.

As recently as last freaking season John Henry was shelling out pretty big bucks for two pitchers--Price and Sale--who were of no use to the Sox.

So, 1) you are blaming the wrong guy; and 2) I'm inclined to agree with JH. Don't shell out big bucks for someone who the day after he's signed might need a new freaking elbow or whatever.

Note to moonslav. Looks like the pitching will be OK. But, just as you said, they have to do better than other pitchers on teams with decent defenses. This team's defense stinks.

OK, that's it. Sale needs to rely on his sinker, changeup, and slider--and use that worthless fastball as a waste pitch. He looked really good in the 5th--even with Hernandez committing his 3 freaking error this season.

The Sox defense reminds me of what Casey Stengal reportedly said about the Mets, I think in their first season as a brand new franchise: "doesn't anybody here know how to play this game?"

How are they going to obtain a competitive rotation in the near future then?
