One thing about the rule changes the Orioles found easy to exploit. Runner on first sees the pitch clock wind down to 2-3 seconds and you can just run. Pitcher doesn’t have enough time to throw over at that point and is basically committed to throwing a pitch…

You can throw to 1B with 0.1 second remaining, so I'm not sure about this.

So the Orioles have stolen 10 bases in 2 games. Sox haven't.

A smart GM would have stocked up on speedy players to take advantage of the rule changes. I’ll leave it at that.

Like David Hamilton, Max Ferguson and to some extent Abreu?

The MLB roster was overlooked, except for Mondesi.

Ferguson hit 181 in Greenville last year... Getting 51 SB's in Low A isn't a big deal in the least. He is unranked in the SoxProspects top 60.

Abreu and Hamilton aren't projected to have an impact on this season's roster.

Yes, that's why I said the MLB roster was largely over-looked in the speed area, except for Mondesi.

I do think part of the reason we acquired Ferguson was his speed and ability to walk, a lot. It's hard to know how that .366 OBP in the minors with that .214 BA translates to AA, AAA or MLB, but I think we saw something. Maybe Rosier was the main guy.

Hamilton was acquired before the rule changes were know.

Abreu was not acquired for his speed, but he seems to be an okay baserunner.

And the guys the Orioles had running all over the place were already on the roster last season.

The issue does not seem to be about speed. It's more about management preparing their players to run, run, run, and how to use the pitch clock to refine their timing.

Might be just a temporary adjustment period to the new rules for pitchers and catchers.

Yes, but why were the O's the only team to see this coming and exploit it?

I think we missed some opportunities over those first 3 games, but hey, we won 2, so maybe it didn't matter.

Huh? There have been increased steals across the league. Sox were really caught with their pants down though. No teams in 2022 averages a steal per game. In 2023, there are 11 teams averaging at least a steal a game.

as long as the pitcher starts his move before the clock runs out he is not restricted to where he throws it

I wouldn't say 1 per game is really "exploiting" the change, but yes, many teams are on pace for more SBs.

The O's are way out in front.

Yes, so I'm not getting why people are saying runners can run when there is 1-2 seconds remaining. Unless the throws to 1B are used up, there should be no timing advantage.
