in his short tenure, Bloom has made some baffling moves — Diekman (2yrs), Barnes (2 yr extension mid season), Ottavino (5 ERA $8 million). And then there was Danny Santana and Marwin.

Santana was not paid much. Marwin just 3 yrs/1. Those deals don't baffle me as much as 2 x $4M.

On Marwin, what baffled me was how long Cora stuck with him. There was a time in May or June where he was still something like 7th or 8th in PAs on the team!

The Barnes 2 yr extension was a real head scratcher.

That's more than Sawamura and others. It's a better deal than Hill got. It's total more money than Wacha.

Until the Story deal, it was the biggest 2 year deal after Kike.

Some other team probably offered Diekman 2 years and $7.5 million.

My disappointment was not signing McHugh for a couple mill more.

I don’t recall that. I though it was out of character at the time.

I bumped the 'Barnes Extended' thread for your perusal. :)

I don't recall commenting on the extension, but remember thinking it was a good idea. That big curve and good fastball were a deadly combo. Who knew he would lose them?

I also thought Sales was a great acquisition because he is so professional on the mound. But apparently his physique can't handle starting--or whatever.

I am not against second-guessing GM decisions. He gets paid big bucks to make good decisions.

But Chaim is in a weird set-up with the Sox, who under John Henry are accustomed to having one of the 2 or 3 highest--if not the highest--payrolls in MLB. But Chaim was one of the architects of the Rays system for evaluating and developing young talent in order to win with one of the lowest payrolls in MLB--in the absolute worst ballpark in the entire history of the human race (well, almost).

Well, many felt Barnes would be traded at the deadline and that move would be in character for Bloom…
