Catching up on some Red Sox MLFAs:

RHP James Norwood signed a minor league deal with NYY

RHP Brian Keller and OF Johan Mieses are signing with Hanshin in Japan.

I know it's not easy finding a team that is looking to take 2-3 players from the 40 man roster for 1 of there own, and who thing any combination of these guys are better than the players on the bottom of their 40, but I'd love to see us trade 3-4 of these guys for 1-2 slightly better players or prospects that don't need to be on the 40.

Duran

Downs

Brasier

DHern

Ort

Taylor (if we don't think he can return to form)

maybe one or two from Crawford, Seabold or Winckowski

This makes room for 2-4 more signings or additions through trades.

I think they could dump any of those guys but Ort onto another team for a younger prospect. I believe that's how we have received guys like Koss in the past.

I'd take a few Koss-like gambles and free up some roster slots.

Agreed, Ort would just be DFA'd.

I do think we might get a better player than Koss for a Duran + Downs + Dhern package. Maybe a Winckowski or E Valdez type or a non 40 man roster type like Wikelman, Lugo or Jordan/Kavadas.

I think Duran, Seabold and DHern each have better trade value than what was dealt for Koss. Downs is veering close to a dump, but I wonder if the Sox just hold onto him for one more year and hope for the upside.

Unfortunately, I have a hunch that we are going to be stuck with Brasier as the 13th BOS pitcher. I'm not a fan, but it could always be worse.

I agree on Downs. His trade value is close to nil, but he still has time to take a big step forward- maybe one more year.

Brasier has 99 lives.

Duran and DHern still show serious skills at the AAA level. I'm just fed up with both. BTV has Duran at 5.9, which I think is double his value.

It really comes down to how much another GM values 2-3 of them and how we value what they offer back-- I know, brilliant concept, right?

I'm kinda surprised.

My guess is, someone claims him.

He has a terrible zone contact %. The swing and miss he has is just horrible. When he makes contact, it's very hard, but he just doesn't have the bat to ball skill that was advertised. It's funny because people thought his bat would carry him and he'd have to move to 2b, but his defense has improved, but his bat has held him back. He was released by his winter league team because he was playing so bad.

Soxprospects.com discussed why maybe Hamilton was protected, as some team might have taken him due to the new baserunning-improvement rules.

They think Wikelman and Bonaci might be too far away, but with so many tanking teams, maybe they get taken.

They discussed Ward and Politi as most likely to be taken. Wallace is too inconsistent, in their opinion.

They had Abreu as 50-50.

Basically, they said they would n ot have been surprised with Hamilton & Abreu being protected, if Ward had been, too.

There is more discussion around who should have been protected a few pages back from page 1.

Paulino and Bonaci are far away. Wikelman is far away, but it's risky to leave him unprotected. I believe Ward was left unprotected due to health concerns, but I would have protected him for sure. I believe Fernandez ended the season with an injury, but he's close to providing an MLB team with bullpen help. I don't think Koss, Jimenez or Bastardo would be selected. Politi or Wallace could be selected, but there are probably better options available on other rosters.
