Some disappointing records on the farm. I had expected better results on wins & loses.

31-33 WOR (7th place out of 10- just ahead of the Yankee AAA team)

25-36 POR (5th place out of 6 and tied for 10/11th out of 12- the Yanks AA team is in first place)

24-37 GRE (6th out of 6 and tied for last out of 12 teams in the league. Yank's team in 3rd)

31-30 SAL (4th out of 6 and the only Sox farm team with a winning record- just barely.)

I think our offense at the two single a teams has been pretty good, and the starting pitching at the two upper level teams has been decent.

Bullpens at all levels has been scary.

We have seen some good numbers from a few pen arms, but yes.

Many of our upper level starters have put up some very good numbers.

ERA (OPSA)

AAA

2.01 Seabold .487

3.38 Winckowski .562

3.78 Bello .663

AA

1.60 Bello .460

2.60 Murphy .545

2.88 Walter .554

3.67 Groome .712

3.89 Santos .674

Pretty solid numbers for 7 starters- an area we have not seen much production from the farm since Buchholz, Montas and Lester.

At Salem, hickey with two taters on the night for a total of 6 on the season.

And Kavadas with his 11th tater of the season, plus two more walks.

Castellanos is really heating up. 4 for 5, today.

Rafaela has his AA OPS up to 1.036 by going 2-5 w a 2B.

GRE game not over, but Jimenez is 3-6, Lugo 2-5 and Binelas 2-5 w 2B.

SAL won 9-6 w Uberstine pitching 4.2 IP in middle relief (6H, 2 ER, 1BB, 5K).

Hickey 2-4 w HR, Kavadas 2-2 w 2HRs & 2BBs, Jordan 2-5 w 3B, Paulino 2-5 and Bonaci 1-2 w 2B and 3 BBs.

At Worcester Fitzgerald with his 12th tater of the season. And Seabold threw a nice game today,

At Greenville, binelas with his 13th tater of the season and decker with his 5th tater of the season thus far in that game.

Seabold got his ERA down to 1.95. His OPS Against was below .500 before the game, and I'm guessing, it still is:

6 IP

6 H (2B & 3B)

1 BB

4 K

Kelly tried to b low the game, but Ort saved his ass.

Kavadas is currently two for two with two walks. The dude is imitating granberg as an in base machine.

There is no way that Jeter Downs is on the Red Sox 40 man roster next year, right? If they don't trade him, they can't possibly give him a spot on the 40-man next year (assuming his struggles continue). He is a .180 hitter and the same thing happened to him last year. At some point, it is time to move on and not waste a 40 man spot on a guy who can't hit at the AAA level.

You never know, but my guess is he's traded.

We can assume we open 10 slots via free agency, although some may be back:

Bogey, JD, Eovaldi, Kike, Vaz, Wacha, Hill, Strahm, Plawecki, Robles

3 Option:

JBJ: ($8M buy out) $12M

Paxton: $4M player option or $13M team option

Sawamura: ($600K buy out) $3M team option

10 Others who may be off the 40 man by 2024 (trade or DFA):

Barnes, Brasier, DHern, Valdez, Arroyo, Diekman, Groome, Downs, Danish, Norwood

That's probably 14-18 possible open slots.

Add certain 6 Rule 5s:

Casas, German, WGonzalez, Murphy, Rafaela, B Walter

Possible 14 Rule 5s, but more likely 2-3, at most:

Fitzy, Feltman, Cottam, Granberg, Hamilton, Jimenez, Koss, Northcut, Ort, Paulino, VSantos, NSong, J Wallace, TWard

Let's say 8 Rule 5 additions.

That leaves 6-10 Free Agent signings.

I guess that's the long way of saying, I can see Down making it on the 40 over some of the other guys listed here, and we don't know how many FAs we'll sign.

Kavadas might give us a better indication of his hit tool if he was challenged more at Greenville.

Hickey, too, and maybe Mayer & Bonaci soon, too.

Promotion season is usually in a few weeks. Good to let these guys have success for a little while too.

If you promote Kavadas and Hickey, you need to have a corresponding move and find them AB's. I don't want Kavadas taking AB's from Binelas and Hickey still needs a TON of work behind the plate or to move him off position.

I think this year was his last shot. His power numbers look nice, but his approach is just brutal. I guess his glove looks like it can stick at SS. Try to package him in a trade to clear up the 40 man spot.

I'm far from being an expert in this area, but here is a stab at it:

Moves made, at some point, this year...

Pitchers

German (add to 40) & Seabold to MLB, at some point.

Murphy & Groome to AAA rotation: Crawford to pen/Pannone let go ot to pen

Mata & Drohan to AA rotation: (Mata might go to AAA)

W Gonzalez to A+

Non Pitchers:

When Casas returns, I think we cut a catcher loose (Grullon?). Ramos to DH or promote Castellanos to AAA to DH w Ramos.

Binelas replaces Castellanos at 1B in AA.

Kavadas replaces Binelas at 1B in A+.

Hickey replaces Scott at C in A+. (Maybe Scott replaces Rangel in AA?)

I'm not sure how to find room for a Mayer or Bonaci promotion, later in the season.

I think we will look to make some 2 or 3 for 1 deals at or before the deadline, to free up 26 and 40 man roster over-crowding, as players return from the 60 day IL and the COVID list. (We also have a lot of Rule 5 additions to make, this winter, so looking ahead at the 40 man roster crunch, this winter, Bloom may decided to make some tough choices on who goes, before we reach that crunch time. That could free up space for further promotions down the pipeline.

Things could get very interesting.

I'm not sure what trade value Downs has. I think BTV over-inflates his value, and other teams have 40 man roster crunches, too, or will this winter.

That being said, I think it's better than 50-50 he gets traded. We have nice depth at middle infield down the pipeline.

Fitzy or Koss (promote?) can play AAA SS

Lugo to AA

Mayer or Bonaci to A+

Inmer Lobo pitching line- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. The 18-year-old lefty has 0.69 ERA over 13 innings with 18 strikeouts to two walks for the DSL Red Sox Blue this season.

I am actually hoping Winkowski can keep it going with another decent outing.

It would have been nice to have Houck for tonight's game.

We got 6.2 from Winkowski and houck threw a ckean 9th. Tonight was how it should be. Young guy gets a chance to start, offense contributes and the bullpen does implode.

Was that the first back-to-back closer stint by Houck?

6.2 from Wink was golden!

Nikko is the Carolina League player of the Week!

For players with 100 AB's in Sox system:

#1 OPS

#2 SLG

#1 BB

#1 OBP

#5 HR

#4 RBI

He's been a wrecking ball this season.

I think hickey has more walks than strikeouts thus far on the season!

Yes, 37-35!

Bonaci, too (41-40)

Kavadas isn 't really close, but 54-68 is not bad.
