Rays signed Kluber for $8M/1. So Kluber, or Whack a?

Kluber is a better pitcher when he actually pitches, but that hasn’t been too often in recent years. The 116 IP he’s totaled in the past three seasons is less than Wacha threw last year alone.

Those who keep repeating it condemn us not to fogedaboudit.

And always remember, history does not repeat itself. But the History Channel does…

Last season! When was the last time Whack a was any good? So now he’s just gonna turn things around, because he is in Boston? History is who you are, and not what you are gonna be. All the hope in the world won’t make Whack a any better.

I’ve already said I have little hope with Wacha.

What more do I need to say?

Do I have to bash Bloom?

You should bash him at least once in a while. Just to prove that you are not his agent.

Like I said earlier. Criticize when he does bad, and praise when he does good if you want to be fair. Nothing wrong with be fair.

Whack a, or Kluber? What do you think Moon?

I was against bringing Perez back and giving Vaz his option.

I do not agree with every move Bloom has made and have pointed out several times that 2 of his biggest 3 moves, last winter- Richards and Perez- were failures.

I still have a very good overall opinion on Bloom, and I guess that irks some posters.

I have no idea but I’d go Wacha. He’s cheaper, for one.

Likely more innings, too.

Close call.

I do like Wacha better than I liked Perez, last winter.

Yes, I was critical of that signing.

We'll see. The Sox had the highest payrolls in the game in 2018 and 2019. Not so long ago. I think JH really wanted to re-set.

Personally I think JH is a very smart dude. And he knows Red Sox Nation will not abide going cheap for long.

Keep the faith, man. There are good times to come.

Agreed, we will cycle back up to spending large, when the time is right.

I think this winter is “the right time,” but if Henry wants to wait one more year, I’ll still think he has been the best thing to happen to the Sox in my lifetime.

Cheaper by only $1M, but Kluber is a better pitcher. The risk you take is how many innings you would get out of him, but if healthy I take him over Whack a.

If Kluber does well he'll make $10-12M.

It's a close call, but I'm thinking the less we spend on our #5 starter, the more we might spend on our new #2 starter.

That's my hope, anyway.

This is not the winter for the Sox to spend big as I’ve been saying ever since I heard Kennedy, and Bloom talk at the end of the year. Yes JH is the best thing to happen to the Red Sox in my lifetime too, but he’s not the same spender as he was 5-10 years ago. To many other adventures going on.

If Kluber does well he’s worth the $10-12M. Time will tell.

The point is, if he doesn't do well, he's still making more than Wacha.

It's a close call, but after the Richards' gamble, I'm shying away from injury-prone pitchers.

I'm not expecting Wacha to be one of our major additions, just like I did not expect Perez to be one, last winter, despite being the 3rd highest paid FA Bloom signed.

I'm not expecting Wacha to do well, but he does have some promise. I'm hopeful we can find something to get him to have a better year in 2022.

I know there is not mush to talk about, so this signing has been talked about more than it probably should have, but I'm trying to stay optimistic and think we have bigger pieces coming.

We may sign Baez and trade for a solid #2 SP'er. Add a decent RP'er and nobody will be talking about Wacha for a while.

No there hasn’t been much Sox news going on, and Whack a has gotten much more ink on here than he should, and I’m as guilty as anyone for doing so. Hope something else pops soon.

Just know that people trying to see the positive side of things do not always think the moves are all good ones.

Bloom's major moves, last winter:

$10M x 1 Richards

$7M x 2 Kike

$6M x 1 Perez

$3.1M x 1 Renfroe (+ 2 arbs)

$3M x 1 Marwin

$2M x 1 Andriese

$1.6M (avoided arb) Plawecki

$1.5M x 2 Sawamura

Rule 5 Draft: Whitlock

One can easily argue that only 3 or 4 of his biggest 9 moves were clearly positive.

Two of his summer moves from 2020 made a positive difference:

Pivetta (trade)

Arroyo (Waivers)

Last year Drew Smyly was signed for a one year $11 mill deal after posting a 5.71 ERA over 126 IP over the previous four seasons combined.

$10-12 mill isn’t impact pitcher money. These one year deals given to Wacha, Kluber, etc. are basically lotto tickets…

Oh you’re more guilty than the rest. Ink isn’t even dry on the contract and you’ve already given him a detrimental nickname :)

I’m never going to consider settling arb year pricing with the backup catcher should be a “major move.”

But that the list has only 3 moves out of 9 that cost more than $3.1 mill really says a lot about the budget he’s working with.

Would you like it better if I called him Ace? Sorry, but none of his stats would support that, and there is only one way to change it.

I didn’t know there were only two choices. Have you considered simply “Mike”?

You think Tampa made a mistake signing Kluber over Whack a then?

For $3M I could have done that, but not for $7M.
