The Irish need to recruit big time quarterbacks. Lately they have been going with what in baseball are known as scrappy, dirt dog types. You are not going to beat the top teams with that. They will play to stop your running game and get your offense off the field. Then your defense will run out of gas in the second half. By the way, it is stupid to open your season on the road against a team that is better than you are. Better to start off at home vs a cupcake.

While the Irish have much higher academic criteria that prohibits them from getting many blue chip freshman, they do have the ultimate recruiting tool at their disposal: every game is on national TV. Nobody else can say that.

Yes, we should be getting better QBs. Agreed, but maybe I'm biased. (LOL)

I'm a ND fan too. I just don't understand how we don't get great QB talent every year. We always have a dominant O line. We always have good RBs who can catch out of the backfield. We always have a Mackey award finalist at TE. We have talented WRs, but never seem to have a great QB.

They voted to go to a 12 team playoff starting in’26, but with options to start earlier, but there may be roadblocks.

This would put ND in the playoffs more often than not.

But when we always know the Irish won't be competitive in the PO, what changes?

It's nice to play in meaningful bowl games, and advancing one round will be better than we've had in ages.

Ian Book turned out pretty well, but I don’t think he was so highly rated going in.

He was one of the best QBs in school history, but he overall wasn’t that good against great competition.

Bleacher Report has Brady Quinn ('03-'06) was the only QB from this century to make the top 10 ND QB list.

The one before him was Tony Rice ('87-'89): 1989 was the last ND championship. Rick Mirer wasn't bad and came after Rice.

Honorable mentions:

Powlus

no Book

He has the most wins in school history for a QB and 2nd most touchdowns behind Quinn

For a long time ND forbade Freshman from playing, so some of their career total rankings need some context.

I guess the AP doesn't think ND's loss shows they were ranked too highly.

New rankings:

1. AL (44 first place votes)

2. GA (17)

3. OH St (2)

4. MI

5. Clem

6. TX A&M

7. OK

8. ND

9. Baylor

10. USC

(Blue= Teams ND plays, this year)

We also play #21 BYU.

Book barely played his freshmen year either

True. I think maybe 2 games, but he was on the varsity team, but did not win the starter job.

That being said, Dan Devine had Joe Montana as the third string QO in 1977, my freshman year at ND.

I don’t think Book is actually the best QB in Notre Dame history or anything, but he does have some of the most accomplishments, which says a lot about some of the guys they’ve had play QB since Clausen. It’s been rough with Kizer, Golson, Rees, Wimbush, etc.

IIRC, Book only really played early on because Wimbush was hurt

I really don't understand why we can't get a great QB.

It's like they don't want anything flashy. They tried to keep Joe Montana down, and if it wasn't for 2 injuries, he may never haver been given a real chance.

He wasn't the typical Domer. He was actually supposed to live in the same hall I was in my Freshman year, and even in the same hallway, but he "secretly" lived off campus and was married. (I never saw him in my dorm, but I did see Orlando Woolridge and other players like Luther Bradley and Jerome Heavens.)

I saw zero minutes of the USC game since they were playing lowly Rice. I have no idea if they are really a top 10 team.

Their QB alone could put them top 10, Caleb Williams is a stud

And Wimbush was so damn inconsistent. Book came in, made all the throws, was more elusive than we thought and decision making was good. He never had an elite tool, just made the plays that were asked of him

Buchner showing today he is not the answer at QB. There is still time left but he very well may lose to MARSHALL....

Yeah he’s awful. Just ignored Mayer wide open to throw a pick 6 on opposite side of the field

I was worried about Buchner before the season even started. Looks like anything, but the TE is a worry on offense.

Awful!

The season is over and it just barely started!

A tough schedule with a new HC, a new starting QB, probably a new starting RB, and another revamped O Line is quite a big challenge.

I said this back in December, and it’s worse than I thought it would be.

I didnt have any confidence in him, but this is worse than I expected. He and Pyne were pathetically bad today.

I didn't expect the team to be great this season with how much talent they lost, but this is unacceptable loss.

Now you know what it is like being a UConn fan.

But I will always be proud :)
