George bought the Yanks in 73. His team won in 77 and 78 then rattled off an 18 year hiatus before the dynasty was built. His teams won 4 more times before his death in 2008. Hal took over shortly before George's death and has been the owner for 14 seasons, seeing the title only once. While he has continually fielded $200 mil teams, he has been unwilling to go far beyond the other teams, actually being outspent nearly every year be it by the sox or dodgers. He has never had a different GM, he has kept the same old guard his father handed over to him while the game has changed vastly around him. Hal has also run the Yanks as a business, maximizing squeezing every dollar out of the fans while not reinvesting it into the product on the field.

Hal has taught his personal monkey, Cashman, to never question the Yankee way and even shoot down any chance Hal isn't "totally invested" in the team while employing a puppet in Boone and even extending him. It is clear the direction is wrong. Yankee fans should be pissed.

Being second in spending almost every year, first in some, is not the reason you guys can't win.

You are basically admitting you guys bought the George rings and want to go back to that.

The Yanks led the league in spending something like 15 straight seasons up to 2014. Afterwards, you guys spent way more than 25 other teams every year.

It's not the money. Recently, you added Cole. You expect more and more?

You should also be looking at payroll as a % of revenues though. I think the Yankees are actually one of the lowest-spending teams by that measure.

PREACH! Old Yankee Stadium was never pimped out like it is now. High cost of tickets, basically a mall on entrance. Expect to spend $200 on memorabilia if you bring your kids and another $50 per person on food and drink. Yankee Stadium is a gold mine. And right now, the Yanks are spending less than they did in 2005, when we were still in the old stadium.

A guy on the Yankees forum I visit put up a table showing that in 2018, the Yankees were dead last in the payroll to revenue ratio.

This year, it was clear that there was a mandate to stay under the cap. The moves at the deadline proved that. Dollars or no, I expect to see a complete team on the field. If there’s a hole, you fill it. Yanks have been missing something every year now and they’ve found a cheap way to fix it which hasn’t garnered them any titles. George would look at the team and say, hmmm, we need a third baseman, let’s get the best one in the game. Rather than saying, hmmm, let’s deal two prospects for this guy Brandon Drury, he should be a little better than league average.

Hal sort of tried to address that payroll to revenue complaint a few years ago, I believe, by trying to put the blame on the Yankees massive debt service costs from the new Stadium.

He is making money hand over fist. And NOBODY ASKED FOR THE NEW STADIUM!! This wasn't fan driven, this was revenue driven.

Hal is so f***ing slimy. I am sick of him.

That was true under George, too.

It cracks me up hearing jacko cry about not spending.

You seemed quite happy with the deadline moves.

We've had plenty of Red Sox fans complain about not spending enough, too. It's just part of the deal when you're a Yankee or Sox fan.

I know, but I disagree with Sox fans that bitch about not spending enough, too.

I'd love for us to spend more, but these owners are in this to make as much money as possible. It's ingrained in our culture.

Yankees payroll to revenue ratio is dead last in baseball. They aren't spending what they receive from us.

True. But I actually think the Red Sox have been very fair to the fans in the way they've spent. They know it's a two-way street.

So?

It was under George, too, so that is clearly not the issue. You won when George spent. You can't win now, spending even more than under George.

You guys spend as much or more than anyone, and almost always have, even after George passed away.

We have been more consistent spenders.

We are the only team to be a top 4 spender in the last 14 years, despite being the biggest spenders only twice. (2018 & 2019 under DD)

But the league has caught up. Yanks used to spend 60% more than the next team. Now, we are getting passed by teams. Players cost more nowadays and we are spending less than we did in 2005. Cashman keeps talking about value like the Yanks are a small market team. Now I am not saying throw finance to the wolves here, but I am saying fill your weaknesses with best available and go from there. This will be a very telling off season

To a degree. This is the thing, the sox have changed their stripes many times over the past 20 years. Theo, Cherries, DD, Bloom. The Yanks haven't. Same GM, same president of baseball ops. Listen, if Hal canned Cash, brought in Neidert from TB and publicized a process of value and still spending on big guys, then so be it. But to keep rolling out Cashman after failure after failure and taking away his biggest team building advantage ($$$) is disingenuous to fans

Maybe for 2-3 years, a couple times...you blew teams out of the water (around 2005-2007 ish, maybe?). For many many year, the Yanks won with just barely outspending the next teams. That was under George, and if you looked at those years spending vs revenue, I am pretty sure those numbers compare closely to these recent years.

1998:

72M BAL

66M NYY

63M LA

(14 teams between 44M-62M)

1999:

88 NYY

82 TX

75 ATL

73 CLE

(16 teams 42M-72M)

2000:

93M NYY

88 LA

85 ATL

81 BAL

81 AZ

(17 teams 46M-79M)

2001:

110 NYY & BOS

109 LA

(15 teams 55M-93M)

NY starts pulling away...

2002:

126 NYY

108 BOS

105 TX

103 AZ

(12 teams 60M-95M)

2003:

153M NYY

117 NYM

106 ATL

103 TX

100 BOS

(9 teams 70M-87M)

2004:

183 NYY

125 BOS

101 LAA

101 NYM

(6 teams 81M-93M)

2005: Biggest domination

206 NYY

121 BOS

104 NYM

(8 teams 81M-96M)

2006: starts getting back closer

194M NYY

120 BOS

103 LAA

103 CWS

101 NYM

(9 teams 80M-99M)

2007: Red Sox Champs

190M NYY

143 BOS

115 NYM

109 LAA, CWS, LAD

106 SEA

(9 teams 80M -100M)

2008 Another big NYY spending year

209 NYY

138 NYM

138 DET

134 BOS

121 CWS

2009

201 NYY

136 NYM

135 Cubs

123 BOS

(8 team 95M-115M)

The gap closed after that, but you were still top 1 or 2 spenders until 2018.

Cashman is a good company man. Hal cares about the company. He doesn't seem to really care about winning titles. Sometimes you have to shake things up even if you think the person in the position is good enough.

And Cashman would get a job in a second, but it’s time to shake things up here. We’re perennially bridesmaids

Yeah, one pennant in the last 18 years just doesn't cut it, when you're the Yankees and spending $200 million plus a year.

I don't doubt Cashman might get a GM offer, if he was to be axed, but why would anyone take a GM who spends $200M to not win a pennant to come to their team and spend $70-190M?

Well, in fairness, the Yankees have made the playoffs a high percentage of those 18 years. Sure he'd get a job. But his resume is losing some luster in my books. I infinitely prefer Bloom.

True. We missed many playoffs with near $200M teams, but seriously, if your team had a $150M budget, why would you think Cashman is your guy?

Personally, I'd stay far away from him, just as you would.

Posted
...and why would a big spending team take him?

Because he's made some excellent moves, in isolation, and his teams generally make the playoffs. It's possible his analytics people and/or scouts have been letting him down lately, who knows? Do you really think he wouldn't be hired?
