There are zero Sox pitchers who can hit the lower left corner followed by hitting the upper right corner--but Quantrill just did it. Bogey swung at both pitches.

I'm with the announcers. Quantrill has better command than Eovaldi today. When Eovaldi hits a corner, it's luck. Quantrill is consistently very close to his target.

Being close isn’t a strike. These pitches are clearly outside the zone, and it punishes hitters for knowing the strike zone. It is trash

That 93 mph sinker is vicious because he also throws a 4 seamer that doesn't break down.

Quantrill gets another call because he is so close on almost all his pitches.

Eovaldi pitching the 6th!!!! Bravo!!!

Two straight games when our starters show heart as well as skill.

Too bad. He left that slider up and in the middle.

Looks like Taylor to keep Reyes from scoring.

With Eovaldi, the disparity is not as great as with others:

ERA/OPS Against

2021

3.78/ .665 w Plawecki

4.03/ .723 w Vaz

2020

0.62/ .611 Plawecki (only 14 Innings)

4.98/ .856 Vaz

Career

3.24/ .656 Plawecki

4.30/ .765 Vaz

(Disclaimer: CERA is fake news.)

Nonsense. This month right here, August, is the only month worth discussing.

Vazquez caught Eovaldi vs. the Jays on 6 August when he gave up 7 runs.

Plawecki caught Eovaldi August 11, 17, and 23 when Eovaldi pitched a total of 19 innings while giving up 4 runs. Cora should have started Plawecki today. Next time I hope he does check with me.

Agreed, plus it’s a day game after a night game.

One explanation I can think of is maybe Plawecki’s still hurting a little after getting hit in the hand the other night and while he might be able to catch in a pinch, he really may need an extra day or two.

Clearly, smearly.

You are looking at a superimposed rectangle that nobody else, certainly no one of the field of play, can see. Plus making that rectangle is tricky because it depends on exactly what part of the hitters torso--which can be affected by the hitters stance--defines the top and bottom of the zone. Then there's the question of what part of the ball's trajectory counts as hitting or missing that rectangle.

For all we know the hitters don't actually know where the top and bottom of the strike zone are.

Nice day for. Nate. Need some offense though. Both pitchers came to play today.

They absolutely did. Great game.

Oh, stop it. I'm being a pissant. You, on the other hand, reminded me day game after a night game, which is a big deal. So you are probably right about Plawecki not being ready to catch a whole game.

This is disgusting. These announcers are actively impugning the integrity of, quite frankly, my absolute favorites in the game of baseball--robo umps. And I know why they are--the umpires union made them an offer they can't refuse. Either you go after those roboumps or you are going to swim with the fishes.

Surprisingly good bunt by Travis Shaw

You betcha. Sox players have in the past been fined for practicing their bunting.

Tough 7th, but I liked that Duran hit the first pitch and drove it--just not far enough. That's why Arauz needed to do, but he already did it last night. No twosies, thank you.

Not getting the offense. Don’t like the looks of this game.

I love this game. Eovaldi was gutsy. We got 2 off of Quantrill, who has been fantastic this month with an ERA of 1.45.

Like I said, that second strike was the one he needed to drive. Quantrill almost teed it up for him.

Todays weak line up couldn’t come through, with the Sox having 4 hitters in a Row with an OPS less than .647

Quantrill had a lot to do with that. He was really good.
