Vazquez does catch the tough foul pops

I have noticed that Vaz has adopted the Panda diet, gaining weight during the season. Must like those road restaurants.

Wonder how long in the early days of baseball did defensive positioning develop so that the majority of hit balls went right at a defensive player ?

Ted Williams handled the shift quite well. He just hit it over their heads.

Yes and no. Great home run hitter, but Fenway has a deep right field. Williams handled the shift well by hitting line drives.

Hey, that was before the DH. Gibson could have done some offensive damage himself (and he was a decent hitter for a pitcher; he hit about .200 and had over 20 career homers).

Mr Gibson was one mean hombre on the mound. And, like you pointed out, he had some power. The guy looked like he had 1% body fat.

Correct...he REALLY had a level compact powerful swing from an upright position with a short stride and looked for pitch location with less than two strikes.

Our 6-9 hitters today have a combined BA of .800 . But they are really great teammates so that's why BA is an irrelevant stat

Yup. I believe he wrote a book about that and never mentioned 'launch angle.'

RF was even deeper before Yawkey got permission to put a bullpen there in 1940. The BP was later referred to as Williamsburg.

Nice. Didn't know that.

In 1941, Williams posted a .406 batting average; he is the last MLB player to bat over .400 in a season. He followed this up by winning his first Triple Crown in 1942

The color line, also known as the color barrier, in American baseball excluded players of black African descent from Major League Baseball and its affiliated Minor Leagues until 1947 (with a few notable exceptions in the 19th century before the line was firmly established)

Also Ted didn't face Hispanic/Latino players.
