By Tom Westerholm | twesterh@masslive.comFormer Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was issued a restraining order in the Dominican Republic according to a report by Listin Diario, one of the biggest news outlets in the country.

Per Listin Diario, Ortiz’ former partner filed a complaint on May 21 saying Ortiz violated Law 24-97 on Domestic Violence. On Thursday, Listin Diario reported her request was granted, and Ortiz was ordered to refrain from “annoying, intimidating or threatening his former partner in person or by phone.” According to Ortiz’ former partner, he “intimidated and threatened” her.

A spokesperson for the national Attorney General’s Office confirmed the report.

Law 24-97 attempts to combat domestic and sexual violence in the Dominican Republic, which a representative of the Santo Domingo Human Rights Institute (Instituto de Derechos Humanos Santo Domingo, IDHSD) in the Dominican Republic called a “very widespread phenomena in the country.” The law was enacted in 1997.

Ortiz played for the Red Sox from 2003 to 2016, where he was a 10-time All-Star and a three-time World Series Champion. He retired in 2016, and his number was retired in 2017.

David's side of the story:

"Ortiz’s lawyers in the Dominican Republic have asserted the dispute centers on Fernandez’s push for greater financial support. The restraining order against Ortiz instructs him to stay away from her and refrain from “annoying, intimidating, or threatening” her. The language in the order Ortiz obtained last week against Fernandez is similar.

“I regret that David’s mother has chosen to use the courts to assert a baseless claim against me in the form of a restraining order,” Ortiz said. “I have not seen her in person for over a year, and since then communication between us has overwhelmingly been limited to texts.”

Earlier Tuesday, Ortiz tearfully told a Dominican television news outlet that it “breaks my soul” to see “my son become an enemy of mine” amid the dispute."
