Did I hear that right/ Cole will be a free agent this year? Bet he'd love spending his summers in Boston, instead of New York!

Can the Red Sox squeeze another $200+ million contract into their budget?

Posted
i think he would be an Antarctica Coast guy if the contract was right....

There will be no wrong offers for Cole, who will not be in Boston next year under any circumstances.

My prediction - Angels...

There is literally 0 chance the Sox can afford Cole. He is likely getting a contract in the range of $250-300 million.

They could if JD opts out or is traded and we don't bring JBJ back.

To reset, we'd have to trade Price. If we trade him for Wil Myers (almost the same money owed), we'd save over $15M on the tax budget cost.

That being said, we will NOT sign Cole. 0.001% chance.

All signs say that Cole will be headed home to the Angels next year for a Price type contract. As to the Yanks, unless George comes back from the grave, and is willing to outspend CA by 20%, they have no chance, and will most likely barely try.

If the Red Sox can't, who can?

Dodgers, Padres- maybe even Seattle or SF.

Some possibilities, but I'm sticking with Angels for now. I think SF has too many big ugly deals, and Seattle is not really a So Cal team.

I could see the Dodgers and Padres being involved, but will SD go with the mega contract two offseasons in a row?

SD spent big and still finished last. Maybe they go for broke.

SF loses Bumgarner and then Samardzija after 2020. Posey, Cueto, Belt & Crawford after 2021. It's not looking so hellish anymore, but they may have learned a lesson.

I agree, LAA looks most likely, but there will be competition.

As those deals get shorter, SF is likely to try and pare a few dollars off before going big again, although I’m not sure how much interest there will be.

Interest thought - if Machado had signed with the White Sox, it actually might have made Crawford that much more marketable...

Someone mentioned that Cole was a west-coast guy. Gee, so were Bill Russel and Ted Williams. I remember Russell;s first year here. Both were as independent as a young man could be. They did fine!

I thought he expressed interest in living out west. Maybe I'm wrong.

Also, Bill Russel and Ted Williams never had a choice. (No free agency back then)

This is the kind of guy that desperate Dave would have ponied up for. Hopefully hang’em Chaim does not have an overwhelming desire to sign sore armed pitchers.

It’s been Cole’s teammates saying he wants the west coast.

Also worth pointing out Boston teams chose Williams and Russell, not the other way around. Gerrit Cole is a free agent and will be making his own choices...

The real trick is identifying and acquiring the next Cole rather than spending $250 million on the last one. What do you say, Chaim?

Good point.

I'm not sure how you do that, but the Rays seemed to be pretty good at evaluating ML talent and finding hidden gems that didn't cost much. I'm hopeful Bloom will carry some of that over to the Sox where he can maybe get even better pitchers, because we can spend more than TB could.

The Astros traded for Verlander, Cole and Greinke. They gave up some top prospects and got one ring, so far.

We traded a lot to get Sale and spent a fortune on Price.

In related news, it sounds like Cole wasn't pleased with the Astros last night and already has his bags packed. (The story doesn't mention it, but he was wearing a Scott Boras cap to boot.)

I don't know, it seems like he was trying to make a joke with the comment about not being employed by the team any more. He went on to say some nice things about the team.

But it does seem a foregone conclusion he'll be playing elsewhere next year.

I think for some of these guys, iy turns into a situation of them playing for teams they didn't choose.

Cole was drafted out of high school by the Yankees, but chose not to sign. He chose UCLA. He didn't choose the Pirates; they chose him. He didn't choose to be dealt to the Astros. That wa out of his control too.

Now, for the first time since college, Cole gets to choose where he plays. That might matter a lot to him. For some free agents, they just want the most money. The money won't be an issue here. Sure, he might leave an absurd amount like $20mill on the table, but that might seem immaterial since wherever he does choose will be paying him in excess of $200 million anyway...

The control thing is why I'm thinking JDM might opt out. It might cost him a few mill, but he'll have more control over where he plays next year.

Well, to get the next Cole, you might have to draft very high. Cole was a #1 overall pick...

It's certainly possible, although I do think anyone who hires Scott Boras prioritizes money over everything. Sure, that is a stereotype on some levels, but Boras is an agent who has a reputation for getting bigger deals and not necessarily deals where the player wants to go. Now, there have been exceptions. (Jered Weaver, Xander Bogaerts)

Of course, Boras is Cole's agent as well. But bear in mind, Martinez has already had one go round with free agency and choosing his location. That's how we got him in Boston...
