What if he doesn’t want to extend and is intent on trying out free agency?

He won't extend unless he feels like the offer is better than he'll get after next season. He may think he'll have a monster 2020 season and make more than $35M/yr x 9+ years.

The Sox do keep trying to extend him.

Maybe they will, but not announce it until after the season for luxury tax reasons. (Can they still do that?)

I didn’t think Bogaerts would take the extension before his final season, but here we are...

I’ve said since Arenado signed that Mookie’s next contract would look similar (8 years / $32mill AAV). Arenado was in a similar position, entering his final contract year...

Mookie is no dummy he's in no rush to sign he seen too many big contracts given away to Machado, Harper and Trout. I think you're right he waits till the last minute to decide his course of action depending on his type of season.

They don't have to wait until after the season starts any more, as we saw with Sale's extension.

They obviously made a change (and a sensible one) in the current CBA on this. Though none of the doofus baseball writers saw fit to explain this to us. Nor did they explain about the change with present-valuing deferred money for AAV purposes as we saw with Sale's deal.

Mookie's no dummy, but there is a real risk of getting injured that can't be totally dismissed.

I love Mookie and would love to see him remain a Red Sox for a long time.

That said, I am strongly opposed to extending a huge contract to him.

What some folks may have forgotten is that the Sox publicly stated that it was unrealistic to think they could keep all of Mookie, Sale and Bogaerts long term. Then they extended Sale and Bogaerts...

So.. Bogaerts and Sale are dummies?

Mookie might wait, but if he gets a good offer he thinks is worth it, he'll sign. Now whether or not the Sox make that offer is another matter.

I have no idea if he thinks he should get more than Harper or Trout or Machado. But Harper's contract is really just crazy long, and his $27.5mill AAV is actually less than Arenado's ($32.5mill). And so is Machado's ($30mill AAV).

With Betts being about 2 years older when he hits FA, getting an Arenado contract would certainly be similar to those deals, possibly slightly better...

I have forgotten that. If that's true, should they have signed Sale?

If they don't think they can keep Betts, they should probably trade him this off-season. That will be tough, because trading a superstar rarely brings back even remotely equal talent...

X asked to be taken care off. I don't see Mookie asking.

They've been known to change their minds, of course.

And I think Bogey signed for less than they would have expected.

So there's probably still some hope of keeping Mookie.

But it sure won't be easy.
