Yeah , I get that . But when you lose a spelling bee , then yell at the winner " You suck at spelling " , it comes across as kind of lame . At least to me . Anyway , for those who feel better by doing that , go for it . No problem .

Here's the difference, and it applies at every level.

As I've mentioned before, I have a lot of contact with high school sports in my area. One thing I've learned is that it's OK to say, "My kid sucks" (as long as you don't say it in front of the kid! LOL) but when someone says "YOUR kid sucks" they're just looking for trouble.

Sure, Corbin would have been great this year, but that contract runs through 2025. That’s a long time to be paying $25mill to a pitcher who gets hurt a lot. And if Corbin spend the next 6 seasons on and off the IL, will the stance of these radio guys change? If paying that much to an injured Corbin got in the way of paying arb contracts to Torres and Judge, those same radio talking heads who are ripping him for not getting Corbin would suddenly start ripping him for getting Corbin.

Corbin pitched a total of 389.2 innings in 2017-2018. Is he really that much more of an injury risk than most starting pitchers?

I don't hate anyone I am in competition with.

I do hate the Yankees.

Corbin would have been good here, but the long term contracts for pitchers, especially non-elite SPers are death to a club trying to stay relevant long term. It isn't like we got nobody, Paxton has been just as effective as Corbin the last 2 seasons and he is far more likely to dominate a game as his stuff is better. Just turned out that this season, he's been bitten by the first innings. Who knows, maybe Corbin would experience the same thing if he was in NY?

You posted that it is a problem for you tho? So which is it? That’s how this whole sidebar started. By you bitching that Red Sox fans are taking shots at the big bad Yankees.

Yes because most others wouldn’t get 7 year deals...

It's completely a matter of respect. This is a Red Sox board, 'Our House" if you will, and we have a right to be offended when someone comes into 'our house' and continually makes comparisons showing that his team is better than ours.

Let me ask everyone this. How would any of you feel if you had a neighbor who continually came to visit and nearly every day told you that his pool is bigger, his lot is bigger, he just had his kitchen redone and it looks A LOT better than yours, his garage is cleaner, his kids are smarter, his wife is prettier and he makes more money than you do. Day after day after day.

How long would he be welcome there before you started firing back?? Even if it's true you wouldn't want to hear it and he'd be being disrespectful by saying it.

Same thing.

Corbin got a 6 year deal.

Still far too long...

You're a risk-averse penny-pincher like Kimmi, then. Which is fine.

Not “penny” pinching. “Years” pinching. Always have been, especially with pitchers.

The only thing I liked about the Price deal was the opt out...

What if I regularly visited a neighbor who routinely reminded me how inferior my life is?:)

Most people would stop visiting that neighbor, unless they had a masochistic streak. :)

I know how I would deal with that situation. And it wouldn't be by yelling , " Ha ha , your kid is a little wimp and your wife is fat and ugly . " When I finished with that , I would consider cleaning the garage . In my view , the Yankee fans on here like to break balls , but they are not obnoxious. It actually adds something to the discussions. That's about all I have to say on this . If trading insults makes some feel better , fine . Go for it . My question is still; why are we so far behind the Yankees ? And what can be done to change it ?

You think we haven't been analyzing the crap out of our problems this season enough?

Too much analysis, in my view . Like many problems, the solution is pretty simple.

You think it's all bullpen.

The Yankees bullpen was much better than ours last year too, you know.

Their bullpen is better and deeper than it was last year . Ours is not . ( I think ours is starting to improve lately ) The bullpen is the only area where they are noticeably better than us . To me , that is very obvious.

The Sox bullpen has been better than expected

The Yankees invested heavily in the bullpen and it’s working. The Sox invested heavily in the rotation and it isn’t...

Yep, our rotation was going to be one of the best this year. It didn't happen.

No, it isn't. Last year their pen had a 3.38 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. This year it has a 4.05 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.

Last year they had had Betances and Robertson. This year they have Britton for a full season and Ottavino.

There's nothing to show it's better and deeper this year.

Nothing except the standings . And that matters .

The much simpler and more accurate explanation is that our starting pitching has been a disaster this year.

Posted

Context may be needed as offense has exploded this year, but the 2018 Yankee pen still looks way better. Bell is right.

(The Yankee pen has actually gotten worse by more than the Sox pen did!)

2018 to 2019 Comps:

Sox Pen 2018>2019 (31 more games for 2018)

WAR

4.8>4.0

ERA-

83>87

xFIP-

96>93

WHIP

1.29>1.34

K/BB

2.56>2.59

NYY Comp 2018>2019 (31 more games played in 2018)

WAR

9.3>6.5

ERA-

78>87

xFIP-

76>87

WHIP

1.21>1.32

K/BB

3.3>2.7

There a million stats . You can use them to " prove " almost anything . I am not going to delve into it , but it seems to me that the Yankee' s bullpen stats are influenced by their mop up guys woes . Their top guys have been very good . But there is a bottom line . The Yankees are on top . Why is that ? If not the bullpen , then what is it ? Give me another reason . Why are they on top ? Huh ?

Mainly because our starting pitching has been a disaster.

Didn't say that.

I'm talking about why our record is what it is.

The Yankees will end up with about the same record they had last year.

The Red Sox are the team that got a lot worse.

The Yankee and Sox starters have been way worse than 2018:

Sox: 2018>2019

WAR

14.2>8.8 (31 less games played)

ERA-

84>104

xFIP-

91>96

WHIP

1.21>1.37 (sick!)

K/BB

3.48>3.03

Yanks: 2018>2019

WAR:

16.3>8.1 (31 fewer games)

ERA-

94>104

xFIP-

89>96

WHIP

1.26>1.32

K/BB

2.79>2.68

WAR per Game:

2018:

Sox: 0.088

Yanks: 0.100

2019

Sox: 0.067

Yanks: 0.062

The Yankee starters got worse by more than our, too.
