Didi and Urshela come up hobbled in consecutive innings, but stay in the game. Chad Green back to pitching like someone you wish was injured. This team is a mess right now. They better get their s*** in order before they lose their whole AL East cushion.

Alright there's been too much negativity lately in Yankees universe, let's get some positive news going:

DJ LeMahieu went through pre-game warmups yesterday with no issues. They've been holding him out as a precaution but he'll likely be available against Boston.

Brett Gardner was able to run and hit after getting a cortisone shot in his left knee over the weekend, and is looking on track to return tomorrow when first eligible to come off the IL.

Gary Sanchez ran inside and hit in the cage on Tuesday. He's progressing ahead of schedule but is not expected back this weekend. Could possibly return towards the end of next week if all continues going well in his recovery.

Luis Severino and Dellin Betances threw from 90 feet yesterday. While they're still far away from returning, it is positive that they're no longer sitting around in recovery mode.

Jonathan Loasiaga and Mike King began rehab assignments on Tuesday. This is important as they are our best minor league depth should any other starters get injured.

And lastly, despite no significant trades yesterday one thing we can be happy about is that Clint Frazier is still on the team and capable of injecting some pop into the lineup should we need him down the stretch. My guess is that he's called up at some point in August and plays a lot of DH with Edwin spending more time at 1st base.

I am perplexed as to why he isn't in NY right now. Frazier should be getting reps as a FT DH and part time OF. Didi twisted his wrist and Gio rolled his ankle yesterday. If EE is pressed into 1b duty, one of Didi and Gio can play tomorrow and Lemahieu returns, we will have an open DH slot. I know we used Judge there last night and maybe the plan will be to use Gardner there tomorrow and ease these guys in, but we are very likely to face 4 lefties in 3 days. ERod goes tomorrow. Johnson is throwing one of the games of the DHer. They haven't listed a starter for the other DH game, but Sale is lined up. Then we get Price for the Sunday finale. Frazier has historically demolished left handed starters in both the majors and minors (really small SS this year). He's the perfect guy to set it and forget it at DH for this series.

The only reason I can think that Frazier is still in AAA is to manipulate his service time and get an extra year out of him. Which is f*cked up but seems to be a pretty common occurrence around baseball.

The Yankees aren't a big culprit on this though. They had Judge start the yr in the majors in 2017. Montgomery as well. They did do it with Gleyber, but that was because we had a major league 2b in Walker who slumped like hell and got replaced. We also brought up Andujar last year before we would have gotten an extra year

Gleyber was coming from TJ surgery and his numbers in ST were awful, in his case the team was not trying to manipulate his service time, he needed the reps in the minors

Word on gleyber is that it's a core issue. Test results forthcoming. This is what I get for that optimistic post I made about our injury situation a few days ago.

So here’s the rundown of this crazy injury list

Severino- expected to start mound work this week. No hiccups since he restarted throwing. On track for an early September return

Betances- expected to start mound work a few days after Severino. No hiccups since he started throwing. On track for early September return

Stanton- no timetable for his knee sprain, but he’s begun running on a treadmill. From there he’ll do agility drills, hitting and a rehab assignment. My bet is he’s ready around the same time as Sevy

Voit- says he will avoid surgery but has a follow up this week. At the appointment, they’ll determine if surgery is recommended now or if it can wait into the off season

Montgomery- threw live BP last month. No word on further progression. I assume he’s still throwing

Andujar- our for the year

Hicks- avoided injury to the UCL or so they say. They’re calling it a “flexor strain”. Means far less to position players as it does to pitchers if the diagnosis is accurate. Expected to resume throwing in 10 days. He’s likely to return in 2-3 weeks. Even if he needs forearm or TJ surgery at some point, he will likely be able to avoid it until the offseason

Sanchez- expected to return for the Toronto series

Gleyber- Core injury, but his dad tweeted out that he is fine and is traveling with the team. I’d assume he’s not going to play tonight but may have avoided significant injury

Urshela- likely to take a few days off after fouling balls of both his legs, but should avoid the DL

CC- expected to return this week

Hale- who knows

Encarnacion- 3-5 week timetable sounds optimistic. If they don’t mess with it like we did with Judge last year, we could see him at the 6 week mark, which would bring us to mid September

Weird year. Our AAA club has lapped the ALE. Cashman and Boone have done an incredible job

Boone should rest Torres for a couple days, if we lose Torres and/or DJ it would be a major blow going forward

F'ing idiots, why risk an injury against the Os???

It's not like a "win or go home" game, now he might be in the IL for a while

Update on the IL

Miguel Andújar, 3B

Expected return: 2020

Andujar underwent season-ending surgery on May 20 to repair a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. He hopes to resume throwing at some point in September and will continue to increase activities throughout the winter, which would allow him to be ready for Spring Training. (Updated: Aug. 2)

Jake Barrett, RHP

Expected return: TBD

Barrett felt discomfort in his right elbow while warming up during the second game of a May 25 doubleheader in Kansas City. He was diagnosed with a right flexor strain and has resumed throwing. Barrett was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 15. (Updated: Aug. 2)

Dellin Betances, RHP

Expected return: Late August/September

Betances threw from a bullpen mound on Aug. 12, the first time that he has done so since sustaining a right lat strain in early June. He threw 20 pitches and said he felt "better than expected." Betances added that his biggest test will be seeing how his body bounces back from facing hitters. He was scheduled to throw a simulated game on Aug. 27. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Greg Bird, 1B

Expected return: TBD

Bird tore the plantar fascia in his left foot and was placed on the injured list April 16. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Aug. 11 that Bird has been in and out of a walking boot. Though Bird has not been able to fully resume baseball activities, Boone said he did not want to rule out a return this season. (Updated: Aug. 14)

Jacoby Ellsbury, OF

Expected return: 2020

Ellsbury has not played in a Major League game since October 2017 due to a series of injuries, the most prominent of which was arthroscopic surgery to repair his left hip labrum last August. Boone said that Ellsbury is moving toward full workouts in the weight room and could resume baseball activities in September, though he is not expected to play this year. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Edwin Encarnacion, 1B/DH

Expected return: September

Encarnacion sustained a right wrist fracture when he was hit by an 87.1 mph slider from Red Sox reliever Josh A. Smith on Aug. 3. Encarnacion has been utilizing a hand bicycle and is not wearing a cast. Encarnacion took ground balls, played catch and threw on Aug. 24. Encarnacion has also resumed hitting soft-toss and tee work. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Thairo Estrada, IF/OF

Expected return: September

Estrada sustained a right hamstring strain while running out a grounder in New York's 6-5 win over the Guardians on Aug. 17. Boone said that it looked like Estrada would miss at least a few days, so the club felt it needed to make the roster move to place him on the IL. Boone added that they are hopeful Estrada's injury is short term in nature. (Updated: Aug. 18)

David Hale, RHP

Expected return: TBD

Hale was diagnosed with a lumbar spine strain after a July 26 appearance against the Red Sox in Boston. His IL stint was back-dated to July 28, and Boone said he is hopeful that Hale's injury will be of the short-term variety. Hale threw 30 pitches in the bullpen on Aug. 8, but he experienced a setback and has been shut down from throwing again. (Updated: Aug. 18)

Ben Heller, RHP

Expected return: September

Heller is currently on a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he pitched a scoreless inning in his return to action on Aug. 17, following a right forearm strain that halted his progress in early July. Heller had Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow last April. (Updated: Aug. 18)

Aaron Hicks, OF

Expected return: Possibly September

On the IL since Aug. 4 with a flexor strain in his right elbow, Hicks was re-evaluated by Yankees team physician Chris Ahmad on Aug. 12 and is said to be doing well, but was told that he will not be cleared to resume throwing until at least Aug. 26. Because the strain is close to Hicks' ulnar collateral ligament, Boone said that the club wants to be cautious. (Updated: Aug. 18)

Jonathan Holder, RHP

Expected return: Late August/September

Holder landed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 10 with right shoulder inflammation, and Boone said that the right-hander is dealing with a shoulder impingement. Holder said that the injury did not occur in one specific game, but rather has been building over time and has not allowed him to bounce back as he normally would. (Updated: Aug. 10)

Jordan Montgomery, LHP

Expected return: September or 2020

Montgomery made his first Minor League rehab start for Class A Advanced Tampa on Aug. 25, throwing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. The club had spoken of Montgomery as a second-half option before he experienced a setback on June 18, cutting a batting practice session short due to what was described as inflammation in his pitching shoulder. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Luis Severino, RHP

Expected return: September

Severino has yet to pitch his first innings of the season due to right rotator cuff inflammation and a Grade 2 strain of his right latissimus muscle. Severino threw a simulated game on Aug. 23 that was said to go well. He is scheduled to throw another on Aug. 28. If that goes well, he could join Class A Advanced Tampa or Double-A Trenton on a Minor League rehab assignment. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Giancarlo Stanton, OF/DH

Expected return: September

Stanton sprained his right posterior cruciate ligament sliding headfirst into third base on June 25. He has been throwing and hitting tee-and-toss, and he's expected to "ramp up" his activities in an effort to rejoin the lineup during the current road trip. Stanton could take on-field batting practice for the first time during the Mariners series that begins Aug. 26. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Stephen Tarpley, LHP

Expected return: September

Tarpley was diagnosed with a left shoulder impingement following an Aug. 10 outing against the Blue Jays in Toronto. He said that it did not stem from any one pitch or appearance, but that the discomfort has been something he has been managing all season long. The Yankees advised that Tarpley rest and take care of it now so he can potentially help the club in September and/or October. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Luke Voit, 1B

Expected return: Aug. 30

Recovering from a sports hernia that he initially feared could require season-ending surgery, Voit is currently on a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and is expected to rejoin the Yankees for their upcoming homestand. Voit, who hasn’t played since July 30, owns a .278 batting average with 19 home runs and 54 RBIs. (Updated: Aug. 25)

Torres pulled again. I would bet he ends up on the IL

I have him on my fantasy team. That's generally not good news for a player.

I made a post about releasing a struggling Benintendi at one point, and that day he went on a crazy hot streak. I'm not releasing Torres. I don't want him to go to the IL. But this is my curse.

Worse yet - Torres is in my keeper league. The one I have Severino and Hicks in...

Posted
That was awhile ago. Torres is still killin it

He's still on my team. That's not good news for him. It is for me...

Urshella to the IL, Voit is back

This could be painful, but I believe they will move Gleyber or DJ to 3rd and have Voit take over 1st base (with Ford as backup)

Posted
If we were in an actual pennant race, no way he hits the IL. They’re saying he’d miss just a couple days, but they needed a spot for Voit and the pen needed arms with Happ and CC in the short term offing. Now CC is on the IL, so that was prescient. The Yanks need the 1 seed, but they also need to be healthy and going all out for the 1 might leave them further injured, so it’s a tough decision to make. Pedal to the metal or conserve and rest? We’ll need to see.
