After all, the Yankees spent 20% less of their revenue than league average but still outspent over two-thirds of the league. If the Yankees did spend 50% of their revenue on payroll, what would their payroll be?

The point is that the Yankees are pocketing an unprecedented percentage of revenue which is going to sit VERY poorly with the players.

But it’s not like the players are unaware of the reset (we are, safe assumption they are as well) and the Yankees will certainly up their spending this off-season, presumably getting closer to a 40% spending...
