You do realize Britton pitched for the Yankees, too, right?

As did Eovaldi of course.

D-Rob does have a lot of Yankee on him, but that wouldn't stop me from signing him.

You sign a Closer for a 1 year deal this year, next Off-Season, you'll be scrambling, to sign 2 Starters, (especially if we lose Eovaldi), A Closer, a SS, 2 utility guys, (Nunez, Pearce), a 1st Baseman (Moreland), and a good chance a DH. I wouldn't Trade too many Prospects this Off-Season, unless you get cost controlled guys.

Next off season you might need whatever good Prospects you have, in Trades. Going all out now is OK, if you have the Farm to keep the ball rolling. Our Farm doesn't have the top of line Pitching Prospects, to keep the ball rolling. You will need Prospects, and Cash, next Off-Season. And hope the Prospects we have, have very good Seasons in the Minors, for Trades.

To me, the ideal situation would be to sign a closer for 2 years and a starter for 1 to 2 years. The problem is, you normally can't get great talent for short term deals. It's a tough call for DD. If he signs a closer and a starter to 3 or more years, and the reste is due after 2020, we can pretty much kiss many of our best stars good-bye.

I know, lots of "ifs" there, but if the re-set is real, then our signings have to be strategic and more far-sighted than some of us want to believe.

Now you only get players on short deals if 1) they’re not impact players 2) they’re older and taking a short deal over retirement or 3) they’re coming off bad seasons and want to rebuild value.

Pitchers trying to rebuild value don’t typically come to Fenway. That leaves older and non-impact players (who actually do sometimes make an impact, like Steve Pearce)...

That is true, but while some players show up for work and cash their checks, others do that and drink the cool aid. Robertson guzzled the cool aid.

Athletes in any professional sport bleed the colors of the team that signs the checks...

He’ll be 34 on opening day. A 3 year deal is a dicey proposition for a guy who hasn’t had to deal with a velocity drop. My assumption is KRob has another year or two of high level production, but the wheels fall off relievers typically in rapid fashion. He’s also diminutive, which makes it all the more likely he sees a velocity drop soon. I’d like him back in NY, but on no more than a two year deal. Preferably 1

Just my opinion but it seems like .....

Relievers in their prime that have 70 or more appearances per year usually have a three year window before the wheels fall off in year 4.

In the case of relievers over 35, i think it is all about command and control.

That pretty much sums it up. Choice 3 is the obvious choice, but when you have so many top players fighting for every open job, you don't get those 1 year signees beating down DD's door.

I was surprised by Pearce jumping on a one year deal so quickly.

That was surprising, and interestingly enough, admirable. Pearce could have ridden his hot 2018 and his WS MVP into a starting gig on a lesser squad and a larger guaranteed payday. At his age, the guarantee is all that matters, years are irrelevant. I thought he was staring a Chris Young style sox contract in the face around 2 yrs $15 mil. Him taking a 1 yr $6 mil deal definitely sold himself short.

He didn't sell himself short. He just prioritized something over money. It's not like he's going to starve to death on $6 mil. Good for him.
