I wouldn't mind the k's and lack of balls in play if there was a pitch count and batters had to keep one foot in the box.

Do you mean pitch clock?

I think pace of game is a bigger issue than the number of runs scored. Hockey and Soccer are relatively low scoring sports , but there is little dead time. Always something to see. Last night at one point, there was an interval of more than two minutes between pitches , and the ump didn't say a thing. The umpire should have the authority to keep the game moving at a brisk pace. Instead , we get cockamamie rules changes from the commissioner's office.

It baffles my mind how they never address the real and very simple problem: too much time between pitches.

Fix that and not much else needs fixin'.

Rule 5.07© already exists!! I don’t see the problem they are trying to create!

Yes, fix it by enforcing the rules.

@PeteAbe

Rob Manfred says 7-inning doubleheaders aren’t part of the future. They were instituted for health and safety reasons.

Manfred also suggested the extra-innings rule could be done. Actually like that one (if you start it in the 11th inning).

7 inning double headers need to go…

Rob Manfred on A’s relocation: “Las Vegas is a viable alternative for a major league club….Thinking about this as a bluff is a mistake.”

The pro sports Oakland to Las Vegas pipeline is real. Good thing the Warriors already crossed the bay.

I can't argue with this.

Pitch clock is easier to establish as fans are more familiar with the tech (already used in football and basketball). Once the fans are comfortable with that change, the switch to robo umps (which still use human umps behind the plate) will be fine.

Theo Epstein on scaling back on the use of analytics:

It’s been changing because organizations, players outside organizations, have been really thoughtful about optimizing performance and that’s changed how the game’s been played on the field. I think it’s time we start being intentional about changing it in a way that’s pleasing for the fans, the aesthetics of the game, and for the entertainment of the game.”

This statement hurts me. This is a complete 180 from Theo's team building philosophy as a GM. You don't build teams for aesthetics and for the entertainment of the game. You build teams to win games.

I'm reading that this may just be posturing on Manfred's part. Since the players supposedly like these rules, it's something to be used as a bargaining chip in the upcoming CBA talks.

I would like to see some elaboration from him on what exactly he has in mind with his last sentence.

The longer we have Manfred, the worse he looks. I thought Selig was the bottom of the barrel. He wasn't.

In terms of aesthetics he's probably talking about the shift. Entertainment wise is probably the lack of runs. What's pleasing for fans is obviously installing robot umps and pitch clocks immediately.

I don't know if you read the article or not, but he elaborated a bit in the article at boston.com.

https://www.boston.com/sports/mlb/2021/07/10/theo-epstein-baseball-mlb-rule-changes/

His main thing it to pick up pace of play (not necessarily length of game). He wants to get away from the 3 true outcomes of an at bat and get some more action in the field and on the base paths. He wants to get back to more stolen bases (hence slightly larger bases and limiting pickoff attempts.)

You're just going to have to get on board Kimmi. The robo ump train is leaving the station with or without you.

The analytics driven crowd represents a very small percentage of fans. MLB is part of the entertainment industry. They need to focus on appealing to the larger base of fans. Speed up the pace of play by giving the umpires the responsibility of doing so. Promote the players much more than is being done. They are the face of the game. Theo is much better equipped for this than is Manfred.

That Henry Davis was chosen number one is a reason why they need to allow the trade of draft picks

No. If the Pirates traded their draft pick, they'd lose out on a ton of slot money. Not sure that's likely to happen with the first pick of the draft.
