3. Selling Ruth to the Yankees, and never properly understanding how important Ruth could be as a full-time hitter

.

While Ruth was the biggest loss, the Sox basically shipped half a team to the Yankees for nothing. They also traded Herb Pennock (Hall of Fame), Carl Mays (should be in the Hall of Fame), Bullet Joe Bush (62-38, 3.44ERA for NY in 3 years), Sad Sam Jones, and Everett Scott (argument can be made for Hall of Fame) to the Yankees.

But in return for all that talent, the Sox did get "Geriatric Jack" Quinn...

But we had to create an opportunity to trade Anthony Rizzo for Adrian Gonzalez.

...and then extend him at the free agent level.

Also, breaking up the late 1970's Sox teams because the incompetent manger couldn't control them to his desires. But hey, Stan Papi!!

And management did not really appreciate how free agent could work

Let's say the umpires reviewed the play and called the runner safe. Now it's bases loaded, still two outs. Very conceivable Kimbrel still gets the next batter and closes out the game. It was not a do-or-die play. Of course if Nunez sailed a wild throw into the dugout that's a different story.

Or the Sox just go ahead and win game 5 in Fenway. This has been a very resilient team this season. They know how to move on from losses. These ain't your 20th Century (at least the latter 4/5ths of it) Red Sox.

Yeah , but you have to admit No No Nanette was a helluva good play.
