Come on. Who outspent the Yankees back in the olden days?

Not only did they have the highest payroll, they bought players like babe Ruth, before free agency even existed.

Got any facts to back it up?

Start spreading the news, They're leaving today

They wanted to be a part of it

New York, New York

These baggy-fat pants, are all in his way

Right through his very hardy gut

New York, New York

I wanna wake up in a city that went cheap

And find we're king of the hill, top of the heap

These little town blues, are melting away

We'll make a brand new start of it in old Hews-ton

If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere

It's up to you, Boss-ton, Boss-ton

New York, New York

I want to wake up in a city full of creeps

And find we're a number one, top of the list

King of the hill, a number one

These little town blues, are melting away

And I'm gonna make a brand new start of it in old El- Aye

And if I can make it there, I'm gonna make it anywhere

It's up to you, Boss-ton, Boss ton

Got any facts to refute it?

Teams did not report salary budgets back then, but it was a well known fact, that when the Yanks needed someone, they bought them or traded scraps for salary dumps.

The draft started in 1965, I believe, so players signed with whoever recruited them and offered the most. To imply that wasn't the Yankees is fooling yourself.

The Yanks were horrible during the latter part of the 60's till CBS sold them to the Steinbrenner group. What was known as the Horace Clark Era. CBS was not known for plowing money into the team.

And again, you don't know, it's just your guess.

And from the stats I could find in a quick search, from 1989-1998 the Yanks only had the top payroll twice ('94&'96), with the sox having a higher payroll several times over that span.

Okay, maybe 50 was hyperbole, but clearly the yanks have outspent the rest of the league by quite a lot over the last 90-100 years. Sure, another team spent big here and there, but the Yanks have pretty consistently been big spenders- not just with payroll budgets, but also with International FA signings, before the limits, pre-draft era young players and just plain outright giving cash to teams for very good players.

Since the Stienbreener era, it's not really even close. There were so many seasons where the Yanks let by $50-75M over the next team, that other closer seasons can't make up for.

Yes, we have bought players that helped us win a ring, but the Yankees outspent us by over $180M during the 3 years we won championships. That number is mind-boggling. This year, we lead the second place team by about $35M. That includes over $35M paid to HRam and Pablito. I guess one could claim we bought a ring, because we signed JD and paid a hefty bonus to get Moncada, who brought us Sale, but even still, this is not like 2004, 2007 and 2013's differentials.

I could pretend to be gracious but I'm not. As Lombardi said, show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser. To get shutdown by two mediocre starters at home in the biggest spot of the year is a disaster. I'm gonna be hearing s*** from all my Sawx friends and co-workers for at least another year. f*** this. Boston played better and deserved to win based on how they played, that's all the praise I'll give. That said, all I can hope for now is that the Astros (a team I very much dislike) pummel them into the ground so at least all these Sam Adams breathing yokels can feel a modicum of my despair.

/end rant

I don't know anyone who drinks Sam Adams since it was revealed that their CEO is a trump cultist.

Well, you would have to win it all before you could be deemed to have bought a ring this year.

But, again, you don't need to be the top payroll team to be considered "buying" a ring.

today is so f***ING awesome.

yankees fans so butt hurt.

Not at all, we lost a playoff series.

Would I have liked to win, sure.

But we've lost them before and will lose them again. Hardly "butt hurt".

Pretty sure he's not talking about you. Most of the Yankees fans I've seen IRL throughout the day have been noticeable quiet. A couple of my close buddies are Yankees fans and they were respectful, only because they love me. But yeah, I can see how it stings.

hahahaha. keep kidding yourself pal. you are on here being butt hurt left and right today.

you forget i live in jersey so i am literally surrounded by tons of butt hurt yankees friends and coworkers.

back to you:

perhaps you can post some more meaningless articles from NY editorial hacks that state how the yankees are favored in the ALDS and will surely beat the Red Sox.

i wonder if the yankees stadium employess have finished cleaning up all the empty bottles of champagne in the visitors dugout yet?

I must have missed where those articles stated that they would "surely beat the red sox".

And if I was truly "butt hurt" I certainly wouldn't be in here surrounding myself with sox fans.

I'll write you a note and flush it down my toilet, you should get it soon.

Lol, we definitely added veteran talent during the year, I agree there. We just didn't add enough of it. We still had 5 players in our lineup who were at or below 2 years of service time. We were built far too dependent on the longball. We had a pen for the ages, but they were handed a deficit three times in the series in 4 games. The sox were better. What they did was build equally through pitching and hitting and they added the one piece that was missing in JD. The Yankees were a good hitting team last year and they added to the offense and didn't add pitching in the off season. It led to a scramble for Happ and Lynn and it didn't work out. I think we will be taking an entirely different approach this year with the financial constraints off

One of the things I posted at the beginning of the year was that it is difficult to rely on 2 or more rookies (or near rookies) in key positions all season. Your young guys played well most of the season, but that's always a risky thing.

Fair and honest response.

I'll try my best to be a gracious winner. :)

The difference this year was the Yankees were CLEARLY trying to stay below the limit. We had a cap on how good we could be because of that fact alone. The gloves come off this off-season.

I agree. I think with the Yankees being eliminated by the Sox, the Yankees for broke this offseason.

That’s exactly why we signed Walker late and dealt for Drury. Neither were needed, it turned out. I think Andujar and Torres are going to be perennial all star level talents. We just need to balance them out. It was entirely expected that they’d tank under the bright lights in their rookie season. Our only two lineup “holes” are in LF and 1b and we may have filled 1b with Voit. If we aren’t sure, both spots aren’t hard to fill with offense. I think we will get a lefty or two to balance out our lineup while investing heavily in the rotation. The team will be vastly different

I don't know that your team needs to be vastly different. You did win 100 games, after all. Not to get all magnanimous and all, but the Yankees have a very good team, and should be good for several years. You guys need starting pitching, so I agree that you will be investing heavily in the rotation.

Probably not, but when another team spends $180M more than you in those 3 rings years, it kind of weakens your argument.
