Cora said it well when he said that of course he would like to win every game but that he will not go chasing wins. Smart man.

and yet he has used Kimbrel in 4 out save situations multiple times this season. this does not compute.

2 different things though really. To me 'chasing wins' suggests managing like it was an elimination game from start to finish regardless of the score.

Well, I will say that I recall one game in which Kimbrel was brought in for the 4 out save that really didn't make much sense to me, though I don't recall the exact game.

That said, I don't think he has misused or overused Kimbrel in order to win at any cost.

Yup. I like to think of it as trying to 'win at any cost', which you do if you're in an elimination game.

i agree. which is why i brought up Cora bringing kimbrel in for a 4 out save in April/May.

I think it's been tried 4 times all year.

For a pitcher of Kimbrel's caliber, going for a 4 out save should mean an extra 5 pitches or so.

But as we have all seen, Kimbrel seems to have some sort of issue with 4 outs or 4 run leads and generally doesn't do very well with them.

And a 4 game sweep against the Yankees right before that.

We can't win every game.

The good news is that the Yankees lost as well.

Scratch another game off of the ever shortening calendar.

The Sox started and finished the trip 9 1/2 games up.

The bad news is they went 7-2 and only widened the gap by 1/2 game

The good news is the Yankees played .700 ball over that same stretch (7-3) and lost 1/2 game in the standings.

I don't think bringing Kimbrel into a game for a 4 out save every once in long while is, even in April/May classifies as trying to win at any cost.

More important than the 1/2 game is the shortening of the calendar.

The Yankees are quickly running out of time.
