Who Should the Red Sox Trade For?

I note that the Nationals picked up Kelvin Herrera today in a rare mid June trade of consequence. They gave up some minor league players but not their top talent. It looks like he was let go to get rid of salary and to restock the minor league. It appears to indicate that trades this time of year can be pulled off if pursued.

Scooter G would be a greaat addition to the team but probably would require too much in trade.

 

What's to much for a World Series ? Just asking ? Is it Devers ? Is it Xander ? Is it Sale ? Because to me it's about BOSTON about the banners about the rings ....not one single player except Teddy Ballgame would I not consider trading for the shot .....marcel Ozunas stock just plummeted big time after that hatchet job error to lose a game ....Ozuna anyone on a buy low ?

OT ....they gave up there number 10 and 11 prospects and a total flier pitcher ....basicly nothing for an elite pitcher in late innings ...we should be embarrassed by that because we needed him just as bad as they did ...Time is now clock is ticking ....Pedey is not to be counted on ...Go get scooter ?

I didn't do anything. DD traded the whole farm away. The only 2 worth anything are out on PED Suspension and TJ surgery.

 

The guys we can do without are not valuable enough to get a big name.

 

We will make a trade, but not for a big name.

 

We have made some mega deals in the past 2-3 years. That is our box.

 

Trading ERod or Devers, which is maybe just the starting point to get the names you mention is a horrific idea.

 

1) It doesn't come close to making us unbeatable. (BTW, the Yanks and Astros have more tools than us to make trades that negate us getting machado.)

 

2) We have a shot at winning next year. I'm not for slightly improving our odds this year at the expense of blowing next year's chance.

 

3) We are 12-1 in ERod starts. Devers may out hit Machado the rest of this season. One never knows.

 

4) Blowing past the $40M penalty line will further hurt our chances after 2020.

We can't trade JBJ anymore, since moving JD to the OF creates a hole at DH that would likely be filled by Nunez. This would also force Holt to FT 2B duty.

 

We can't trade Pom, because he's hurt.

 

We can't trade any of our other starters without creating a gaping hole. Trading Devers (and others) for Machado creates a giant hole at 3B for 4+ years going forward. With maybe just enough money to keep Kimbrel and Kelly, there'd be nothing to fill our 3B hole. Maybe some here would be okay with Nunez at 3B and Holt at 2B FT next year, then Holt at 3B and Hernandez at 2B after 2019.

 

Best case scenario:

 

Pom returns and looks sharp. We trade him to a desperate contender for a decent prospect.

 

Pedey comes back and can play nearly everyday by the playoffs, or Nunez gets his s*** together, or Holt bucks the fizzle out trend, so we don't need to spend all our remaining assets at 2B.

 

We trade the prospect we get for Pom and add Swihart or Hembree or someone like Beeks in hopes of prying someone useful from a non contending team.

Might not be a bad idea, if you don't think you might not sign him. These Relievers are getting huge Returns, especially in good Prospects. In fact elite ones.

The best investment in FA is Relief Pitchers. Fastest way to build your Farm, and they are still pretty cheap.

Yup. And trades now can be done for less than what it would cost at the deadline. That is why I am pushing DD to get us a 2bman now.

I wouldn’t pay what he is going to demand in both years and AAV. I would move on from him after 2018 season ends. But I keep him for the pennant run this year and the chance for a parade. Unless we are out of it come the end of July...

IMO, this team does not really have a weakness that needs to be addressed, provided the team stays healthy. If Pedroia cannot return, I would look to upgrade at 2B.

 

I agree, I tend to think waiting until the 11th hour gives us our best shot at making a nice upgrade, wherever that may be. If needed. I remember liking DD’s deadline deals the past few seasons for the most part (Nunez, Ziegler). If I didn’t 100% like a deal, I at least agreed with the direction of it (Pom).

You can't really count on that. Most early trades are blown away offers.

 

If early trades were cheaper, more teams would make them.

 

This looks like a case of KC either being impatient and making a bad move, or really liking those particular Nats' prospects more than most scouting organizations did. (Fangraphs had two of them at 7 and 10 in Washington's system.)

We’re already in a Rolls Royce and We’re driving to November. We may need a new gas cap or maybe a back tail light, but I think we’ll get there.
