obinson Cano Facing 80-Game PED Suspension

By Jeff Todd | May 15, 2018 at 12:58pm CDT

Mariners star Robinson Cano is facing an eighty-game suspension for PED usage, according to reports from Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 (via Twitter) and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). An announcement has yet to be made but may be issued today.

Yes, but they can activate him after 10 games. He tested positive for a diuretic, so while he didn’t get slammed for a PED, he was hit for a masking agent

Doc how does a diuretic mask anything?

Don't they just make you piss? I understand drinking a lot of water and pissing it out can help get ride of many things but isn't getting caught just a crap shoot if the samples

are taken at random times?

Is it just a coincidence he was close friends with Melky Cabrera who was also busted for PEDs?

Cano was also close to ARod. BTW, ARod is close to G.Sanchez. I sometimes wonder about him.

I do think Cano may have been on a HOF trajectory, but that is over with. Good. I remember Yankees fans use to argue that Cano was better than Pedroia; that argument can't be supported anymore.

Is this the biggest name busted for steroids since ARod and that Miami clinic? I guess Braun was a big name too. I can't think of anyone else. Dee Gordon isn't a big name. If I'm not mistaken, Manny Ramirez tested positive prior to the Miami clinic.

Just when it looked like the Mariners would compete this year..... They will probably fall apart now....

If the Mariners do make the playoffs, I believe Cano wouldn't be eligible to play in the postseason, right?

I was waiting to see when you'd surface with that comment. Took 55 minutes, longer than I expected.

The last Yankee Dynasty was fueled by roids. They were walking around the locker room with needles sticking out of their asses and hypocrite Joe Torre saw nothing ... and now he is the conscience of the game. What a joke!!

It looks like the decision is final.

[h=2]Robinson Cano Suspended For 80 Games[/h]By Jeff Todd | May 15, 2018 at 1:40pm CDT

1:16pm: Cano was suspended for a diuretic known as furosemide that is prohibited by the JDA among other diuretics and masking agents, as Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweetedand the league has since announced. Since the ban begins immediately, Cano will be eligible to return in the middle of August.

Cano has issued a statement through the MLBPA (Twitter link) in which he says the “substance was given to [him] by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment.”

As ESPN.com’s T.J. Quinn rightly points out on Twitter, though, the JDA does not treat diuretics and masking agents in the same manner it does PEDs themselves. Here’s the language from the JDA, Section 3(F):

furosemide - I take 40 mg a day of this stuff.

It makes me piss like a Cossack for 8-10 hours.

I don't know how a player can take this stuff and play in the field. I have to piss every 15 minutes!

Cano's full statement:

"Recently I learned that I tested positive for a substance called Furosemide, which is not a performance-enhancing substance. Furosemide is used to treat various medical conditions in the United States and Dominican Republic. This substance was given to me by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment. While I did not realize at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful.

For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor of my life. I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love, and after undergoing dozens of drug tests over more than a decade, I have never tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance for the simple reason that I have never taken one.

Today I decided to accept MLB's suspension. This was the most difficult decision I have ever made in my life, but ultimately the right decision given that I do not dispute that I was given this substance. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates and the Mariners organization. I am extremely grateful for the support I have received during this process, and I look forward to rejoining my teammates later this season."

So I wonder what was the "condition" that Furosemide was being used to treat??

Apparently it is used to treat fluid buildup due to heart failure, liver scarring, or kidney disease. It "may" also be used to treat high blood pressure. This is all per Wikipedia. Apparently one side effect of overuse is gout, so that's hilarious.

I'm not a doctor or even a medical expert, but from what I'm reading (admittedly from others who are also not experts), there are any number of medications that are better and more widely used to treat legitimate medical conditions that furosemide is used for, which brings up the question of why he was taking that one.

On the other hand, his statement lacked the defensive accusations against those who accused him that so many others did, and his decision to not fight the suspension and admit that he knowingly took furosemide inclines me to give him the benefit of the doubt until I have more information.

The Yankees should give back their 2009 championship banner. 2009 should no longer be recognized as a Yankees championship in the record book or by MLB. The 2009 Yankees team was loaded with PED guys, A-Roid, Cano, Melky, and A.Pettitte. There are probably more but that is all we know right now.

Almost every team has/had steroid users. Get out of here with these stupid comments.
