Isn't this two 8th inning fails for Kimbrel so far even in this young season?

Anyway Dealin' Dave has got to do something unless maybe Thornberg is right around the corner. Even with that, we have no pen at all. One arm is not going to get it done.

This team will win many games though. MLB is a train wreck this year and believe it or not, we are one of the better teams. But this team is not convincing me it will go far after Sept. No pen is no pen.

UGH f*** off. Poms performance with the offense tonight and we win. Zero consistency the last two nights. Unreal.

Based on one game in May against the best team in baseball?

You betcha. Johnson got three outs, and Smith got 2 without a problem. Kimbrel choked, and he'll choke again. He was afraid to throw his curve against Gardner, and that killed him. He threw 7 straight fastballs because he was afraid to throw the knuckle curve, which for him is an indispensable pitch.

So many experts in game management, pitcher psychology and scouting here! The Sox should definitely replace their coaching/scouting/FO corps with members of TalkSox!

Agree. Personally, I would have left Smith in, but Cora has all the data on match-ups, etc., stuff that everyone here has no clue about.

And on another night Johnson totally implodes and on another night Smith totally implodes. They go from getting it done one night to failing for two. That is not a pen. It just isn't, not in an age where starters go 6 innings and call it a "quality start".

We need to stop the bleeding out of that 7-8-9 spot. By replacing JBJ, that's 1 taken off the board. Pedroia should return by end of May, it also shores up this defense.

I will absolutely agree that with this pen, any guy that is performing at all needs to stay in as they are just too inconsistent night to night. If a guy is going good, try to get what you can out of him because the next guy you bring in is likely to be a train wreck and that includes Kimbrel unless you give him a clean inning.

It’s still one game and against a red hot Yankees team. There is no other better closer out there. Kimbrel is fine. Porcello wasn’t great tonight and just an awful night pitching wise. It is what it is. I hate losing to these *******s. But they are playing damn good baseball.

You think So???? He's a hellllll of a lot better than the s*** we have playing now .

Based on what? I like him, but he's proven absolutely nothing at MLB level.

Why are you posting on TalkSox instead of making money hand over fist with your incredible ability to see inside people's brains? I mean, that's the only explanation for your otherwise ridiculous assertion that Kimbrel is "scared" to throw a curveball. I think the more likely explanation is that no pitcher is going to be lights-out every single time, and Kimbrel's bad day happened to come against the top lineup in baseball. Clearly, the only solution is to get a new closer from the hundreds of top-shelf options available right now. Hey, maybe Alex Cora can pull the next Mariano Rivera out of the same interdimensional pocket that he'll get a new catcher from!

It's not only the pen right now that's sucking. Also starting pitching. This team will make the playoffs but idk about this division.

You are basing this on one outing in May. This is ridiculous. Stop making stuff up.

There is history to his not acheiving coming into innings with batters on. I'm not sure if it true, myth, or lore. I recall not seeing super success. I'd love to see the stats on it. OB and Remy brought it up right after and mentioned that it was questionable if he is only good for a clean ninth.

Agree completely. Tonight I was hoping, nothing more. It's possible Barnes would have hung in there, but it sure didn't look like it. I thought Kimbrel was the right call, and he might have been if they had called for at least one knuckle curve against Gardner, but instead he get 7 straight fastballs.

The hitting was fine tonight despite missed opportunities. But Porcello our ace stunk it up, only to have the lineup get that 6-5 lead, only to have the bullpen give up 4 in the 8th.

Last night was almost a "good loss." Tonight was bad, very bad.

Wow. Well that about does it for my GT visits this year. My eyes are bleeding from reading some of this stuff.

Yeah, it's gotten so bad I actually miss having you around, which is basically like having such a painful stomachache that you miss the days when all you had were blinding migraines.

There is history of this for every relief pitcher ever. Let's use common sense.

I too have missed you the same way I miss having a root canal when the anesthesia just doesn't take!

The Sox lost with their best pitcher on the mound, he got beat, it sucks, but it is what it is, were 1 game back, the Yankees aren't going to keep up this pace, just as I warned the Sox wouldn't keep up their 17-2 pace. All of you guys saying you would've put Hembree in, or trusted Barnes to stay in are full of s***, we all know you would be calling for Cora's head if he left Barnes in, brought Hembree in, or left Smith in and they struggled.
