Mookie Betts seems like a fairly talented player.

Don't you think it's a little early to be jumping on the Mookie bandwagon? He's got 5 HR's in 16 games. That translates into 50 on the season and we all know that's not sustainable.

IMO we should wait before offering him any contract extensions.

Or not. :D

oh boy - He's too smart for any hometown discount either. What ever it takes might be where the Sox need to come from with this guy and his talent.

hand him a blank contract and tell him to fill it in. I'm 100% serious. honestly we could get a discount if we did this.

Remember when some posters, who actually take ST'ing numbers seriously, were wondering if Betts had lost his mojo?

That was funny!

They apparently tried last year and Mookie turned them down. Offer was supposedly 5 years, $100M.

Yeah I think the Sox have a narrow window to win it all with this great team before the players start going their separate ways.

I don't think they're all going to go their separate ways. I think the FO will salvage some of them, and Mookie should be at the top of the list.

And BTW, I think this is exactly the way MLB wants it. They want to build parity among all teams. They want the fans from each team to believe that their team is part of a cycle of winning and rebuilding. That's why there's revenue sharing and it's why each CBA institutes more and more severe penalties for spending.

Whether that works remains to be seen but the histories of Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Houston, and Minnesota make a convincing argument that it works. Even the Evil Empire had a couple of down years when they rebuilt. They may or may not win this year but they'll be a contender and that's what MLB wants - contenders.

Yeah I tend not to buy into the Mookie Hype machine. It’s hard to take seriously. He never had 3 HR games in the minors and we’ve seen this before... and .. ... [voice fades out incoherently... ]

I wish my memory was better Moon (without looking back at every thread that has been written) but I remember this being mentioned and why not? I think that just about everybody that said anything about his 0 for whatever streak in spring training still thought that he would snap out of it. I hope that no one truly thought that all hope was lost with respect to Mookie. I didn't get that impression but I guess you never know.

The Yankees won the WS in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

In the 17 seasons since, no one has won in consecutive seasons. The Giants and Red Sox have each won 3, Astros 1, Royals 1, Cardinals 2, Cubs 1, Yankees 1, Phillies 1, White Sox 1, Marlins 1, Diamondbacks 1, and Angels 1.

Seems to me MLB has pretty much succeeded already.

One game. You know. Small sample. Bottom line is before that he was hitless for THREE DAYS! Sat-Monday. Sunday and Monday he didn't even get a foul ball. DFA him.
