I doubt there will be much "awkwardness", if JD signs with the Sox.

(Unless he sucks out of the gate.)

Yeah noooooooo pressure now right ??????? We will treat JD with kid gloves right ? Wow we are losing our identity as fans .

I could care less what JD says aboput negotiations. I'm not booing him opening day (assuming he signs here).

If he sucks like CC did, I'll boo with everyone else.

(BTW, I hated the CC signing day one, so maybe my trigger finger was twitching sooner.)

Carl Crawford in 2011 talking to Boston fans:

“I want to end the diary saying something to the fans of Boston. I just want to say I’m sorry for the year I’ve had,” he wrote. “You guys have been really supportive and I appreciate that. Hopefully when we get into these playoffs, I can be the real Carl Crawford that I know I am. We’ll see.”

He had problems with the media, not really with fans.

"It was just different for me," he said. "Coming from Tampa, from that environment to that environment was so different I didn't really understand what I was getting myself into. I think that was the big thing. There was just such a big difference from what I was used to.

"I definitely wouldn't have went to the highest bidder. If I could have done it over again I would have gone into more detail into everything. I didn't do any research about nothing. I didn't know much about Boston, only when I played there. If I went into a little more depth as to what I was getting myself into things probably would have been a little different."

He added, "Once I realized it and I had seven years I didn't know what to do. It was just one of those things I had to sit out and wait. I was dealing with the struggling at the time and a bunch of other stuff. I had been in Tampa so we had been shielded from a lot of media stuff. I didn't have to go through that stuff. That was new for me, dealing with the media and stuff like that. I didn't how to handle all that stuff up there and it showed in my game. Then I started getting hurt all the time. It was just always bad, bad all the time.

When he complains about Boston, he's always throwing the media under the bus (for good reason). However, he hasn't outwardly called out the fans for poor behavior so saying that he was "crucified" by fans here seems wrong to me.

Slugger J.D. Martinez was the focus of a skirmish yesterday in the war of words, with some sparring over the fact that the Red Sox have not upped their longstanding offer — which evidently still stands at a previously reported five-year, $125MM level. Per Nightengale, the only other offer on the table right now is from the Diamondbacks, but it’s just a one-year deal. Clearly, all involved have reason to anticipate that there’d be greater interest than that from other organizations, but it’s a notable point in relation to Martinez’s hopes for generating pressure on the Sox.

Notably, too, the Red Sox are perhaps still aware of other means of fulfilling their desire for right-handed power. Nightengale says the organization spoke with the Guardians earlier in the offseason about a potential deal that would have brought Edwin Encarnacion to Boston. Whether or not there’s any plausible hope of reviving those discussions isn’t clear, though, and the Sox are said not to have been willing to send Jackie Bradley Jr. to Cleveland. Clearly, that’s no surprise, as Bradley is a much younger and more affordable player who still offers plenty of value to the Sox. Indeed, it’s amply arguable that Bradley is a more valuable overall performer than is Encarnacion.

Now this is interesting!

I don’t remember Crawford getting booed at games. I think the fans were very patient with him.

I remember fans calling him a "Monday."

From what I saw, the fans and press were very hard on him. He was at the time the highest paid outfielder in MLB history. ..

I have a hard time believing this, but if so, JD's demands and his attitude towards Boston's 5/125 offer look even more delusional.

It might be time to tell Boras that the offer will decrease tomorrow and every day thereafter until position players report to spring training, after which it's off the table entirely, and see if that gets anything moving. I'd say we've been more than patient here.

I'll bet not too many people remember that Crawford was writing a blog that year...I sure didn't.

So now we're all reading that JD is fed up with how inflexible Boston is and might sign elsewhere out of spite?

So if Boston doesn't value him enough, the plan is now to sign with another team that values him even less? Does this make sense to anyone?

The Press is tough on most of our players, but I go to lots of games and I don’t recall the fans giving him a hard time. I don’t consider Talk Radio call ins to be fans. They are mo mos seeking attention.

I picture that it was just like the opening of any Doogie Howser episode.

It seems like JD may be a very very dumb person. At least he can hit the ball into orbit. Other than that, seems to as dumb as rocks.

We reportedly have expressed interest in Encarnacion. I don’t know if I believe that. We have Hanley and Moreland sharing first base and DH. Where would Encarnacion fit?

Perhaps J.D. Martinez and the Red Sox will reach a six-year, $150 million deal with deferred money that reduces the present-day value to $125 million.

Or not.

Scott Boras negotiated the largest-ever deferred-money contract for Max Scherzer:

Non-economic factors are honorable. :)

I don't think we should really judge the guy based on these vague second-hand reports.

But maybe he should issue some sort of clarification before they're burning him in effigy in Boston...

From what I read, that interest is gone. I would guess it was gone before they signed Moreland.

@EvanDrellich

Source today says Red Sox and J.D. Martinez are involved in "a good faith process." As Scott Boras said yesterday, the sides are talking.

I do not doubt frustrations exist as @Ken_Rosenthal reported

I think some of the things attributed to JD are really weird. He'd be better off if he didn't say anything and left it to Boras.

Yeah, probably so. On the other hand, I'm guessing Scotty Boy has a lot to do with them sitting on our offer for 2 months.

Yes.

He might be frustrated and antsy.

He might have said something to a friend that seems out of line.

None of this concerns me.

If he signs with us, it will be because he wants to play here. He's had more time to think about it than CC and Renteria had.
