Shaw hit a walk off HR for the Brewers last night and after 138 games, now has .276 BA, 31 HR, 99 RBI, and only 3 errors at 3B.

On the other hand, out for the season with shoulder surgery is injury-prone reliever Thornburg who dealt with elbow injuries in the past. He avoided Tommy John surgery in 2014 when he underwent a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection and the Brewers shut him down for the rest of that season.

It galled me at the time and still does that the Sox gave up on Shaw and gift wrapped 3B for Sandoval.

With Shaw at 3B from the onset of this season, the Sox would have wrapped up the division title by the end of August.

1) You can't assume Shaw would have done this well with the Sox, although it's pretty certain he'd have done better than Pablito.

2) Shaw probably would have played 1B with us not 3B, or he'd have prevented the rise of Devers to the ML level.

3) Thornburg's injury was unfortunate.

Yes, the trade looks horrible, and you should be commended for being so dead against the deal when it happened, but Shaw's massive improvement in 2017, particularly when compared to his second half of 2016 and his minor league career numbers was very hard to project or expect.

It would have been great to have had Shaw on the Sox, but as everyone knows, without Papi here to protect him, he'd have sucked just like everyone else.

Really, you thought Shaw was the future at third before the trade?

I did indeed and predicted during the 'hot stove' season an improved 2017 for Shaw. But I didn't know at the time that it would be for another team.

You predicted Shaw the future third baseman for the Sox going forward.......wow....................... good call....... ballsy even after his deadfull second half and not so amazing showing in AAA.

Need to find something in the middle, perhaps.

As Sarah Connor said: God, a person could go crazy thinking about this.

I was very upset that Shaw was traded. Bit the bullet thinking that Thornburg was going to be key in a relief role and that Sandoval would at least be able to stay afloat at third. Obviously it is behind us now and the hind sighting ******** that gets done here does no good at all. I never expected to see Devers with us this year. Now that he is i'm very glad that he is. I'm still thinking that he will be our third baseman for some time.

For me Devers has made all the angst of that trade go away. We still shouldn't have traded Shaw for THornburg, but at least we were able to resolve the 3B position so that it isn't a festering sore.

I am not mad about the trade, I see why desperate dave made the trade.

We needed an 8th inning guy and Thornburg'a stats said he could be that guy.

Where I get frustrated with dave about this trade is:

1.) thornburg had a history that says the arm could go at any moment. You would think after being burned by smith, he would have learned his lesson. But no!

2.) dave knew moncada was going to be part of the sale trade. Why include Shaw? Did he really feel pablo was going to bounce back? Or did he have total confidence that Marco was going to have a breakout year?

3.) he overpaid. Did he really fall so in love with Thornburg that he could not have walked away from the table and moved on?

Hopefully dave pursues ohtani with the same balls out aggressiveness that he pursued smith, Kimbrel and Thornburg!!!

I never thought Shaw was going to be the third baseman of the future, but we didn't need him to be...even 2016 Shaw would have been a good deal better than the various stiffs we trotted out at third from April through July, and he could have served as a cheap first base option with some pop for 2018 and after.

Not a good deal any way you slice it...yes, Thornburg could come back healthy and pitch effectively again, but he'd basically have to perform at his 2016 level (2.5 bWAR) for the next two seasons just to match what Shaw has done for the Brewers this year alone.
