8/29 - vs Toronto Blue Jays

That was quick. Dribbler by Bogaerts and two line drives. We need to get to this guy and will if they leave him in.

Also, his offense has not given him any runs, so he doesn't have a lot of room for error.

 

In last 7 starts the Sox have scored 6, 3, 3, 2, 12, 4, and 6 runs. Throw out the 12 and the 2, and it's still 22 runs, 4.5 runs per game. Keep them and it's over 5 runs per game. Not great, but not that bad either. It was earlier in the season when he got terrible support.

How many 0 a nd 1 run games have we had this year with Sale pitching. I think at least 5. May this not be another.

After 5 innings, Sale has thrown 80 pitches and Anderson 65. Sox have hit several balls hard right to someone but Toronto not so much.

 

Both starters have 3 K's and no BB's.

Intentionally or not, didn't we learn in the WS that it doesn't have to be intentional to be obstruction?

Bigger question, why did Beni steal second with 2 men out, a man on third and Betts up? I suppose if Betts hits a single we score two but if Beni gets thrown out we waste an opportunity. No matter, Betts took two on the plate and then hit a ground ball. Need more from him.

 

Maybe Moreland will come in for Young with a right handed pitcher.

Finally a little justice with that cheap run. Jays seem to me to be even more capable of boneheaded plays than some teams. Bautista badly misplayed that single/double to RF. The run down was absolutely the worst I can remember. Farrell had every right to argue interference by donaldson deliberatedly falling on Nunez, but it's still a tough call.

Watch the game. It was a double steal. I say again, double steal. Toronto should have nailed Nunez but they blew the rundown badly. given our dearth of scoring opportunities and our weak hitting, it was a smart gamble.

Sale is last man standing after 6 with 90 pitches, a good bet for 7. Nice, gutsy, well-executed start tonight so far. Our ace comes thru. But I hate scoring just 1 run against these guys.

The thing about that double steal is that it should never work to score a run. The only way a run is scored is if the defense botches the play. Which they did, thank you.

The book on Hanley must be that he can't hit a fastball as all four pitches were 4 seam fastballs. He showed the Jays the book is wrong. We desperately needed that run as Sale may only go another inning.

I thought we might put Moreland in for Young but with 2 outs and no one on, JF decided to stand pat.

Really? You mean a runner on first should never try to steal 2b with a man on 3b who should in turn never attempt to go home on the throw to 2b? And FWIW, this catcher could easily have made a bad throw to 2b to make Nunez's theft easier.

?? I didn't say that at all. What I'm saying is that the only way it works without the "cooperation" of the defense is if the defense allows the runner to go to 2B to keep the runner on 3B from going home. Furthermore, in that situation there were two outs and if they'd gotten Beni trying to steal the run wouldn't have counted.

 

And yes, the catcher could have botched a throw to 2B, which was my point. In order for the run to score it requires a bad play by the defense.
