About Steven Wright, sox prospects summation is: potential for fringe fifth starter. He was better than that, but not as good as the hype last year on talksox. I mean, his knuckler would come and go.

But, heck, control has been an issue for Porcello this year to a degree that is mind-boggling. Ditto ERod.

Pomeranz gets away with basically 2 pitches--a 91 mph fast ball and an excellent knuckle curve--because they work well in tandem, because he works hard at hitting spots with steadily improving command, and because--contrary to what I have said much too often about him--he is very determined. His turnaround this year came after he publicly complained about Farrell taking him out too soon. I thought Farrell was right, but liked Pomeranz speaking up, especially when he backed the words up with deeds. ERod should have that determination, but that 95 mph fast ball of his makes him think that's all he really needs.

I think Fister is similarly determined, and Sale the consummate professional baseball player who also happens to be a very good pitcher. He is that rare blend of hyper-competitive but also very focused.

Pomeranz can easily go over 91 mph

When did he come out in public and say anything about Farrell? Did I miss that?

Pretty sure he means public as in 'in the dugout and on camera'.

Pom is always one pitch from disaster yet somehow is able to walk the tightrope. He also gives no length. He's a mid rotation starter. You cannot enter the PO's with him as your #2. You need either Price to return or ERod or Porcello to finish strong.

Oh, I think we have been misunderstanding each other. I had been talking about David Wright's (Mets)injury history and you thought I was referring to Steven Wright (Red Sox pitcher). Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm an idiot. You wrote David like three times and I still didn't catch it.

you think? It is one of the things that tends to bother me with this type of communication. I have no idea what was said between Farrell and Pomeranz. We all assume I guess but we don't really know.

That's somewhere between highly debatable and total hogwash. Pomeranz has been getting to 6 innings most of the time lately. And even if he only gives you 5.1 like last time out, that's just 2 more outs you have to get from the pen. And if it's the second game of a PO series the next day is an off day so you can ask more from the pen.

Pom has shown a better ability to get out of trouble than anyone on the staff. Sale rarely gets in trouble. Pomeranz can start off an inning with 2nd and 3rd and no one out and get out of it unscathed orwith just 1 run. He almost never blows up. He can put guys away with the strike out. He can throw a DP ball when needed. This guy is better than anyone thought he would be, and I thought he was good. He has matched up against some top starters on other teams this year and come out on top.

Don't blow a load there Buddy. His improvement is a recent development and not so far removed from a crappy end to a season.

He also has a very limited repertoire of pitches.

I like what he has done but I am not completely sold that he can or will sustain the current level of success.

He has never been a 200 IP guy.

Durability is the one unanswered issue about him. Other than that, I don't think I have overstated what he has done this season. When I saw him in Spring Training this year, I was quite concerned that lots of hitters were hitting him hard, and when the season started, I was concerned that he had Dice K diseases with high pitch counts, but he has compiled a very solid season -- far better than the season that the reigning Cy Young winner is having. Porcello is the guy who scares the crap out of me when he takes the mound. He made an error last night in the first inning, but couldn't work out of trouble or limit the damage. That has happened far too frequently this season that Porcello has blown up.

I agree with all of this.

He's an interesting pitcher for sure. He looks like he should get pummelled out there, but then can dominate a game.

That k-curve he throws he can throw a multitude of different ways, different angles, differernt drop, different bite....different speed........

And his fastball is sneaky fast and probably more so to a batter waiting on that curve........

I think what we are seeing maybe the real Pom, and last year was the injured version. It will be interesting to see what happens when the innings start to add up over the year.

But what the heck do I know............ I'm still a sucker for E-Rod and thought this would be his breakout year.....
