Question away. All I ever said was that people tend to overvalue line ups, much like they overvalue saves. You are putting far too much into that simple statement.

From BP:

"In short, most of the hand-wringing and scrutiny of batting orders is for naught. Batting order simply does not make that much difference. Managers tinkering with lineups so rarely shun convention that most of their changes would affect their teams' output by only a few runs over the course of a season.

Were it not that the conventional wisdom has become self-fulfilling prophecy—batting order is important because everybody thinks it's important—Martin could have pulled his lineups out of a hat all year long and hardly lost a game in the standings.

That's all I'm saying.

Nobody overvalues saves. No one cares about saves. It's a false equivalency.

To all you TS sweathogs,

I'm here to announce that Slasher definitely doesn't like saves.

Truly yours,

2011 wasn't that bad of a year guy

@SPChrisHatfield

Noe Ramirez, who grew up in Los Angeles, claimed off waivers by the Angels.

Good. He was never great here but he is a legit MLB relief pitcher who will get more chances.

Best of luck to him.

Assuming no trades, here are the possible contenders for pen slots for the 2018 Sox (in rough order of chances at winning a slot opening day):

Barnes (2 options)

Workman (2 options)

All below have options remaining:

R Ross

R Scott

B Johnson (SP)

R Elias (SP)

A Maddox

B Taylor

H Velazquez (SP)

Jalen Beeks (SP)

Justin Haley (SP)

Legit? Noe?

I'm not sure he's "legit" either.

MLB

31 IP 1.57 WHIP

4.99 ERA 9.4 K/9

AAA

135 IP 1.16 WHIP (Good but not great)

2.60 ERA 9.9 K/9

He's had a nice strike out rate, and may make it in the bigs, but I'm not s0 sure.

Oh you guys knows so much about baseball!

How can I ever know enough to be able to post without being shot out of the water by so many superior and powerful brains?

You folks are f***ing pathetic with your vulture-like attacks on a poster's opinion.

As if the matter was one defined by absolutes.

But of course a hastily gathered set of stats are the only method of making THE ASSESSMENT.

Blow it out your asses you self inflated boobs.

Go back to wearing your wives underwear and be silent.

Barnes is so unpredictable! Not good tonight.

I wonder if Leon's pitch calling would have made a difference as Barnes, Kelly and Hembre all had issues.

The sox' bridge has been great this year, but they lack a track record. And one of the things that has made them great is the length from the rotation. Boston has the 5th fewest relief innings pitched in all of baseball. Losing Price and keeping Fister in the rotation doesn't help that. My anticipation is that the bridge will show its warts the more its used, and with the long season waring down and Price and Pom looking at absences (Price's probably for the duration), you'll see some frustration from the middle and some extended outings from your closer

My apologies, this is also in the game thread, but I placed it in the wrong place

I don't think Pomeranz will have much of an absence. Its just back spasms.

I do agree though, I don't trust this bullpen at all.

You never know. Kershaw missed a month with his. All depends on his recovery. If he's back to normal in a few days, then he'll miss one start. If he is still really sore in a few days, they'll do some more imaging

Hembree time has come and gone. At what point do you make a move?

College senior with average stuff.

Before next year. Hembree is out of options, and unless we have early pen injury issues, he should not be ahead of Wright and Ross.

You never know, but if I'm not mistaken, Pom has left a game early more than once before with back spasms and has been able to make his next start. He was already feeling better a few innings later.

All I know is I'm loving me some Workman.

Yup. It's time to try him in some more high leverage situations.

Thank goodness Sale is pitching tonight. He should be able to give the pen a bit of a breather.

I'm glad the gave Reed a high leverage situation. I think some went too far in criticizing him based on just a tiny and initial sample size.

I agree on BM. I feel Workman should pass Barnes and Hembree on the high leverage usage chart.

Kimbrel

Reed

Kelly

Workman

Barnes

Hembree and others

Hopefully, it was just a short acclimation period with Reed. He was pretty good with the Mets before being traded to us.

Fly ball pitchers don't usually do well at Fenway.
