Price has given up a SLG of .415 this year before tonight, compared to .363 for his career. He's striking out a lot of guys but giving up way too much hard contact. It's like hitters are really comfortable up there and hacking away. I think the point about not pitching inside enough may be a valid one.

It's just the continuing theme. It's the Yankees and it's not being able to hold a lead. A lack of run support also goes with the territory being the #1 starter. You are generally lined-up against the other teams best pitcher, so you need to be able to win a low scoring game. #1 pitchers are paid to dominate and win low-scoring games, not just put up quality starts (QS are great for the middle/back end of the rotation, but a 4.5 ERA is not doing your job at the top...) Just like the top corners in the NFL are paid to shutdown the top receivers. Yep, their job is tougher than the #2 or slot corners facing lesser competition, but that's why they are paid the big bucks...

As for his stuff, his command was definitely off and his curve was flat. That is a bit of a concern.

The idea that "aces" win consistently with little run support is stupid. As I noted above Kershaw is 22-43 with run support of 2 or less runs. Baumgarner is 10-48. I think we would agree that both of them would be considered aces under any definition of the word.

This team can't afford to lose to crappy teams. Gotta take advantage. And there goes the lead... Price is way off tonight.

Edit: I won't lie, I'm still frustrated with Price. It's the middle of July and we are still waiting for that "Ah, now THERE is a $30 million pitcher" performance... I want a dominant start already. Weak sauce.

price is no an ACE,he is not a #1 but a #2 at best!

700, we don't strike out much. 4th lowest in the majors. But we also don't score much at all. 23rd in baseball. Also 23rd in BA and 23rd in OBP. Tonight, we were 11 for 28 vs Price with a walk and 3 doubles. Our line vs Price today was .392/.413/.500. We have murdered him all season.
Sometimes pitchers struggle against certain teams. In this case, he may have struggled because he couldn't put away the batters on strikes.

I am not going to open a vein over an outing of 5 2/3 inn and 3 runs. We won the series, and going in, I did not expect a sweep

More than fair point IL. Do you have the record for the past couple seasons? Just curious if the splits reveal anything different than the overall record.

Awesome. So our "ace" struggles against our greatest rival whom we play 18-19 times a year. No worries at all there.

Price didn't look good tonight, but we this loss is on the offense. Hard to win games regardless of your starting pitcher when you only score 1 run.

I never said win consistently. 22 wins with 2 or less runs IS pretty amazing and is exactly what he is paid for. But Price hasn't really suffered from a lack of runs, not looking at the season as a whole. The team has scored 97 runs in his 20 starts (including tonight). That's 4.85 runs a game....

I am not worried. He gave us a chance to win. He wasn't in top form, but there was nothing there tonight to make anyone jump off a ledge.

22-43 is worlds better than 1-7. or 8-45 for his career.

He was an inch away from getting out of the inning on the ball that hit off Pedroia's glove.

Sure. But when you give up 11 hits in 5.2 IP you pretty much deserve to give up at least 3 runs.

I really hope he turns it on in the second half and has a playoff run for the ages... but until I see it, I'm unfortunately worried he will inevitably puke on himself once the leaves fall, the temperature plummets, and the games matter... I'm a "I'll believe it when I see it" kind of guy, and with Price, we just haven't seen it.

It wasn't an awful outing for not being at his best, but I would say a prayer of thanks had Buch had this as his good outings.

Thus far, he has not been a great post season pitcher. I will worry about that if and when we get there. I am just happy that it is past the middle of July and we are over .500 and competitive. This is a huge improvement from the last 2 seasons.

Oh, so it's Price you're complaining about tonight. What are the odds.

Just can't seem to close in on Baltimore when given golden opportunities

I'm cautiously optimistic that things will settle down now that we added pasta, I mean Pomeranz, and ERod might have started to figure it out (and Buchholz might FINALLY be kick out the door) and the bullpen should come together nicely once Kimbrel is back.

Tushay. Erod looked damn good.... Our pitching should be just fine.... Still a bit nervous about Clay but time will tell. I just hate losing games like this with Price pitching. If you told me Yankees would put up 3 runs and Price is pitching I would put my life savings on us winning. It's one game but still very important when trying to close in on Baltimore.

And since June 1 they've scored 22 runs for him in 9 starts (2.44 runs per start). 8 of those were in 1 game meaning in the other 8 starts it's 1.75 runs per game).

Basically there's been no in between with him on the mound; they've either scored a ton (as in his first 11 starts when they averaged almost 7 rpg) or very little as in the last 9.
