Ah the old Billy Beane taking a baseball bat to the clubhouse wall because of "luck" gag. I don't buy it. Luck can win you one game, but won't get you to win the whole thing.

2006 Saint Louis Cardinals. It happens.

The team also had Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein (his second consecutive AS season) and a young Yadier Molina.

That's a good foundation for a team that was great at home and struggled mightily on the road.

When the Sox trade for 2006 Albert Pujols, let me know.
David Ortiz is no slouch.

The Sox have a great foundation. They just have crappy starting pitching. Edmonds was injured most of the year and Rolen was not the Rolen of 2004 anymore. But their main parallel? A true ace (Carpenter and Price) and various stages of suck/mediocrity for the rest of their rotation. Jeff Weaver and Jeff Suppan, anyone?

Is he going to hit 49 hrs this year?

Jeff Weaver was a veteran pitcher about a year removed from being a top of the rotation guy. Suppan lost the game he started in the WS.

Scott Rolen hit like a superstar that WS too.

Stranger things have happened.

Jeff Weaver was a 4.58 ERA, 96 ERA+ pitcher by the time the Cardinals acquired him. Doesn't scream "top of the rotation" to me. Neither does "86 MPH" Suppan, Jason Marquis or Anthony Reyes.

Offensively, this team will have no issue. They have firepower. "It's the pitching, stupid" as the famous phrase goes. My only point is that the 2006 Cards (who honestly had poor starting pitching, that's not debatable) are proof that sometimes wonky s*** happens during the playoffs.
