Just found this from WEEI. Farrell was speaking of Castillo's chances of getting AB and the writer explained why Shaw was not pinch hit for yesterday.

 

As I suggested, Farrell may actually know something that others are not thinking about.

 

"In a scenario where Farrell wanted to pitch hit against a lefty pitcher — which he chose not to Tuesday when Travis Shaw faced reliever Ross Detwiler because of the way Shaw had handled lefties in spring training — it would be Young who would get the first call."

 

Right or wrong, he had his reason.
